Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHere are a few great reasons to participate in tomorrow's boycott.
First, here are complaints I am seeing and reasons why people are not going to participate. They say: It's not going to put anyone out of business. It isn't a real reduction in spending because people are buying more the day before and the day after. It's too short term to make any difference. Oh, and there's one post going around that says we should plant a garden instead, which, OK sure. But here are the things the boycott will do, things the boycott is meant to do, if a lot of us participate:
1. Oligarchs are the force behind the Mump administration. Oligarchs get their wealth and power from our numbers, our buying power. The boycott is a way for us to show them WE can take those numbers, that buying power away from the oligarchs if we choose to. It is a way to show them they abuse us at their own peril.
2. It is an act of solidarity. It shows us that we can work together. We are not alone. We are a force when we unite. It is a thing we can all do, and we should all do if only to be there for each other.
3. It's a beginning. Perhaps it will show some of us that we don't need to be buying from the companies and people trying to trample us. Perhaps it will be the first of a series of boycotts that DO affect the bottom line of those companies and people trying to trample us. Perhaps it will whet our appetite to flex our civic muscles harder.
4. Finally, it's a way to protect our own psyches. I don't want to participate in the society being forced upon us. I won't buy anything tomorrow, but my plan - which is going well so far - is to only buy food, fuel and emergencies during the Mump administration. It makes me feel better. It makes me feel like I am less complicit in what they are doing.
There are many here who are posting that the boycott will do no good. If you feel that way, don't participate. But stop trying to discourage others from participating. If this thing is big, it will do a LOT of good. And in a lot more ways than you might be expecting.
Please post if you are boycotting for other reasons, or see other benefits that I haven't listed.

As for the nay sayers, you are free not to participate. But, some comments are disparaging of those of us who wish to participate. That is not helpful or productive.
Peace.

(91 posts)I tried to express in another post that this was about unity. You did it so much better. We can do something simple with people we have not agreed with in the past and that alone can be meaningful. Think about the many forms of entertainment that people participate in on Friday nights--theatres, restaurants, etc. It could have impact. My own participation will be very small, but I am hoping I will be a part of a growing movement.

(14,272 posts)We need to send the message.
We are prepared to not spend a penny tomorrow. We have food and gas and will pay no bills, buy nothing, and no cable TV either.
We will blackout.
That's our power.

(59 posts)Great post by Scrivener7. Of the benefits listed, I believe that solidarity is a most important and overarching benefit.
Lacking solidarity, we can't acheive much of anything. But with our collective power, we can do much.
Fear of the masses is really the only thing that our oligarchs do fear. Tomorrow, if enough of us exercise solidarity, we can at least raise a few of their eyebrows and plant some seeds of doubt and concern.
One step at a time, we can affect change. No politician wants to fear the masses. Now, they fear maga physical retribution if they were to break ranks. We outnumber maga, and our power is unlimited.
When we can shake the oligarchs and interject our own dose of fear into hearts of the repub politicians, our power will be felt by them all - including rump.

(59,522 posts)We need them to fear us. Not because we threaten them with violence, but because we threaten them with a united front. Because none of us wants to play this horrible, horrible game they're forcing on us.

(9,212 posts)So I rushed out to buy some food, etc., last night 😹
Oh well, it looks like there are a few things I may still need so I dont know if Im going to be able to do it now, but Ill try.
However, this is not going to change my overall buying etc. Im still going to be purchasing from Amazon and wherever I normally purchase after this.
We dont have enough sun for a garden and I cant dig so Im not gonna be doing anything like that.
We have started talking about transferring money into safer things than the stock market. And some other is going to go into secure Canadian bonds.
I do hope this has at least an effect to show them that we do have some power, etc.
I dont think its realistic to only spend money on food, fuel and emergencies though there are other things you need such as healthcare, etc. some people need to do things like crafts and art just to keep their sanity through this and so on. Im not going to stop living my life. I think that would be a bad idea. Its already been taken over enough by all of this recent crap as it is. I also have to buy a new car in the next two months or so because my current car which is 20 years old is not going to pass inspection this year they told me.
Anyway, Im wondering, how are we going to know if it has an effect or not? Is anybody keeping tabs on this? Also, another issue is that the psycho supporting population are not going to be doing this for the large part. Maybe the ones who were fired will.

(22,951 posts)This first time through is a dress rehersal of sorts. Failures to communication and participation are to be expected. As these repeat, I think the word will spread better, perhaps choosing not to do it on a lot of people's payday, etc, I would expect them to be more noticed.

(7,765 posts)The difference today is we will limit it to locally owned restaurants. The Outback's, Olive Garden's and Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen will have to wait.
We don't really do much shopping at Target and Walmart anyway. We need a new trash can from Lowe's but it is nothing that can't wait.
Aside from our dinner, this economic boycott is quite easy for us and I question now what kind of impact we my wife and I will have since we are relative 'minimalists' anyway.
