Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI rarely post on DU. I have less than 5000
Posts tho I have been either lurking or a member for many years.
Why? Because many times people can be unnecessarily unkind.
Just put up a post and I am just deleting it.
Not worth the flack.
But I will continue to check DU daily and rec. and pay my dues.

Hang in there. DUers mostly don't mean to be unkind. I will say that right now, the stress of having TSF in office and MUSK destroying everything is really difficult for most here. We should support each other.

(3,119 posts)for buying dog treats at a store (? can't remember), which was being boycotted for some reason. My dog at the time had a misaligned jaw and had trouble chewing, so the only place I could find these little bitty treats was at that particular store.
Another time it was for reheating my husband's coffee in the microwave.
I've been a paying member since 2008 & have just over 3000 posts, and that is one reason. Sometimes people can be so judgemental, it's just not worth the stress.
DU is always my first stop in the morning & I enjoy reading all the posts to keep informed, so that is good enough for me.

You sure you're not overreacting somewhat?

(3,199 posts)A word fixed it and was ridiculed. Still.
Why go through all that?
Not worth the effort.

(3,199 posts)It was over a misspelled word. College educated cpa here and wanted to go with Martial and instead went with Marshall.
Sarcastic replies ensued.
Thing is? There may be more than a few of us that are leaving social media that might want to voice our opinions.
Every time I post it is with trepidation. Just wondering who will reply sarcastically unsupportively.
So I very rarely post. But its an excellent place for information and I remain a loyal member.

No one is better than anyone else.
Don't let ANYONE chase you off here.
Some people are thrilled to correct spelling and grammar mistakes, or to otherwise belittle you over something minor.
Respond in a way that will make them think twice about belittling you again.

(78,500 posts)I have had numerous people point out when I mis-spell a word. Some are polite, some are rude. Either way, I let them know that being Irish (nature and nurture), I'll spell words however the fuck I want to at any given time.
Such things should bounce off our backs like a duck off froozen water. Bloody christ, years ago a former DUer said she had "proof" that I am Patrick Buchanan. I still laugh about that one.

(112,617 posts)Patrick Buchanan!
I ran into a botanist out in the field a couple of years ago, and we worked our way through plant id's. After a while I realized that she was just making up fanciful common names on the fly for the plants we were seeing. I thought maybe they were regional names, since she was from another state. I asked about that and she said oh, no, she just likes to make up names for the plants. That is kind of like an accountant telling you that they like to just make up numbers.
I found that strangely liberating and I still chuckle when I think about it. We don't want to take ourselves too seriously. "A rose by any other name..." and maybe "a word by any other spelling?"

(3,199 posts)reply is from a member I always respect and rec. and generally give grace. I just looked at my profile I have less than 3000 posts in geez? Many years. Also have 100% chance of jury service. And you know its not easy to give that sort of time to be available for jury. But also the reason I love this sight. Because it cuts down on the crazy.
Yes I should toughen up. But I also believe that if the goal is to expand the sight? Maybe some should be more tolerant and kind. And I also believe that making people feel less than isnt the way forward on this sight much less for the country.

(20,070 posts)Right now, and I really don't blame them given what's happening in the US. Still, unkindness is not what we are supposed to be about here. Try to see past it.

(11,373 posts)On Friday, the majority of us just watched Trump and Vance go on an attack on Zelenskyy.
So when DU members attempt to degrade and belittle other members for any type of mistake, it comes off as Trumpian to me and it says more about them compared to the person who made the mistake.
There are members here who are near illiterate, some with handicaps, some with bad eye sight, and some like me who have chronic brain fog due to Fibromyalgia. And yet, here I am. I take care of clients who can't care for themselves due to age related conditions or who have dementia for my line of work.
I could type something out, and read it and reread a dozen times I won't catch my mistakes. It doesn't define me and doesn't make me unintelligent. It makes me a human being that makes mistakes. Whatever, it is what it is.
I have seen a few mistakes in OP's and I've privately message the creator of the OP to let them know about the mistake. I'm not making a big deal out of it and I'm letting them know like an adult would let another adult know, instead of belittling the person.
So please don't let them get to you, ALBliberal.

(668 posts)As you can see, my post count is much lower than yours and Ive been here since 2010. I love DU and would like to participate more, but I worry about grammar and punctuation too much to write a lot. I just wanted to let you know that I understand what youre saying and encourage you to keep posting now and then because your opinion is more important than your spelling.

(24,486 posts)My signature at the bottom of my posts: "I'm not a DUer, I just post here. DU: You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave." That's my philosophy. My Ignore list is huge. I don't get into it with any DUer who pisses me off, I just put them on my Ignore list. It makes life easier here. I've been warned for posts, threatened with suspension--I really don't care much. These days, DU doesn't offer many threads or posts that make me feel better about American life, or lack of it.

(35,088 posts)every check, complaint or mean response (I rarely see those) is a chance to learn. I know how icky and stupid that sounds but it really is true. It took me a while to ever post and I still do not post a lot but it is a great way to learn and check yourself. BTW I am older and it took me this long to work this out. I am sure this sounds stupid and that you have heard it before or I am being a jerk assuming things and all that can be correct but...flack can be good for you, really. We need all our voices to correct the wrongs and boost the right things we all believe.
This is hard for me because I just suffered a small stroke and could not even remember my name or words or how to spell (it took me about 6 tries to get the word *spell* right( head/desk).
We need everyone, let the flack slide. Most of us don't bite.

(230 posts)I like to read what others have to say, but not comfortable posting. There is always someone who gets aggressive over semantics or something you said that didn't translate well. I do most of my posting on Blue Sky now. So far I've had few problems.

I got dinged for a slightly nasty response in one thread. My reply wasn't to restore the post, but to point out that it was in response to someone whose troll-ish style reminded me very strongky of (redacted) user who was banned, and may have resurfaced under another handle.
No probs since then. Some styles are very distinctive.
Good luck.

(61,535 posts)I remember when I first found DU and joined in 2004 it was a bumpy ride for me for a bit of time. It is the same in a few gardening forums I participate in. Opinions are like assholes - we all have them. We also have a full range of personalities.
My view - if you have something to say, say it. If you are well within bounds of the guidelines, and someone comes back at you with sarcasm or disrespect - fuck em.
This place is quite outstanding - lots of great opinions, concern for our country and for each other. I think there is sensitivity about proper spelling. We can't pick on right wingers for spelling errors on their signs and their own sites if we get too sloppy. There is also likely a correlation with age and vocation. I am an old dude, and a writer - so spelling errors to me are like hearing an out of tune instrument on a song. But...I generally don't bring them up.

(31,074 posts)I got so upset I didn't post again for weeks until something came up I just had to reply on. One other time someone decided to "school" me on the difference between your and you're. They made me feel like and illiterate because were so rude about it. I gave it back to them saying I hadn't the privilege of a "fine" higher education like they had.
