I try to remain hopeful that the American public will reject his bid to utterly dismantle more than 75 years of commitment the four freedoms and commitment to allies who share those values, but dark thoughts sneak in. One of those dark thoughts is that we will see radical Christian Nationalist loyalists engaged in coordinated efforts to spark violent "anti-Trump" protests that will then be used as the excuse for declaring martial law and usurping every governor's authority over the national guard.

Anyone considering attending an opposition event or engaging in some action, must perform due diligence to ensure the sponsors are legitimate advocacy/MAGA opposition organizations that have been in existence for a reasonable period of time and sponsored effective, verified events and activities.

Now more than ever, nothing can be taken for granted. Any assumption that things are as they appear no longer holds. Start from the premise that things may not be as they seem until verified through multiple reliable sources.

He’s followed in the top ten in the line of succession by Moses Johnson, Grassley, Rubio, Bessent (Treasury), Hegseth, Bondi, Burgum (Interior), Rollins (Agriculture), and Lutnick (Commerce).

I’m reminded that Nixon chose both Agnew and Ford as his VPs, because he thought they were such weak choices that he wouldn’t be impeached.

or even a Governor. When Nixon resigned, Ford was his VP. Nixon had chosen Ford to replace Agnew who was by then in jail.
When Ford became POTUS, he chose Nelson Rockefeller as VP. So for the remainder of that term neither POTUS or VPOTUS were elected by the nation. If something had happened to Ford, Rockefeller would have succeeded and then HE would have chosen a new VP. I believe Congress votes on the choice.

Has that happened before?

At least Rockefeller was a liberal republican. Such a thing doesn't exist anymore, and hasn't for decades.

The specter of Vance as president is a frightening specter as he's a nasty, little shit as we witnessed his disgraceful performance trying to bully Zelenskyy in the recent Oval office meeting. And the MFer followed that up by disparaging our allies the UK and France last night in an interview, calling them some random country not capable of doing what trump can do to 'help' Ukraine.

Again, a nasty, little shit.

that the Old Man has that makes his followers revere/fear him so blindly. I think Vance would lack the seemingly bottomless control the Old Man has over Congress. They might not fear his unproven influence over the voters.

He also lacks the family based grift-support structure the Organization offers.

I think Vance would be as bad as any non-Orange Repub we've seen since Bush the Elder. But he would not be as bad overall as the Old Man.

I would be willing to take that chance, with no better future on offer.

It's not that Vance has no charisma; it's that he has anti-charisma. He is thoroughly unlikeable, even by those who share his repugnant political beliefs. He's too awkward and whiny, with none of the swagger that impresses the rubes. I think he would flounder while MAGA devolved into backstabbing and intrigues. In any case, that's what I hope would happen.

I don't agree with those who say that Trump is only the symptom and that another comparable figurehead could take over. I think MAGA was the perfect confluence of spokesmonster and loathsome agenda, a marriage made in the bowels of hell that wouldn't have nearly the same clout with a different monster as its face.

There's a mental incapacity clause in the Constitution that Congress has in pocket. His hamfisted attempts to demobilize the American military and generations-old alliances on behalf of Kremlin orders is a pretty blatant dare to be removed from power.

Setting aside the morality and strategy, he's stealing a lot of money out of a lot of pockets very quickly, with no legal authority to do so (NATO is a treaty, meaning he needs a supermajority to end or even modify it).

Still, chaos is a ladder, as the saying goes, so don't rest hopes on "the system" rescuing the republic. The critters of DC mostly feel fine with this. Hard-working, middle-class people having their livelihoods stolen by a tyrant has not interrupted the cocktail parties.

Don’t wait for a toady Republican congress to impeach him and remove him from office. If Trumpsk were to declare a “deal” dissolving the United States, and making its territory the newest Oblast of the Russian Federation, the Republicans in Congress would unanimously vote for it, and the Roberts Court would find it constitutional.
