I am not pulling this out of my ass. Former SS commissioner Martin O'Malley is saying that SS checks could stop going out by April, and the cuts to SS will end up collapsing it.
It may just be doom and gloom speak, but I am running the numbers if I don't get SS. I will have to up my IRA disbursements and hope my pension keeps coming.
Hoping those little signs at the SOTU made a difference, but I am making plans.

(1,216 posts)my partner and I have alternate plan B and alternate plan C which I get a lot of criticism for from people I know but when it's all said and done I rather be solvent in bad times and not worrying about making it to the end of the month due to a lack of funds than having a lot of fun that costs money now. Plan A, B and C any one of those plans by themselves would take us over the threshold as we are frugal and plan ahead. But it has been I will admit a long and difficult journey with personal sacrifice for our plans. I totally get it some of us have no choices in this matter due to circumstances and we are lucky in some respects, but we also have discipline which is what got us to where we are. Have a great day everyone!

(44,862 posts)With no Social Security, no bills will be paid. There must be millions of people who will be delinquent on their bills if Social Security doesnt get paid. I cant believe the economy is gonna stay stable

(32,349 posts)I believe I am the only person who believes the best plan for Congressional Democrats is to do town halls. Why do you think Congressional Magats have been ordered to not do town halls? The people are pissed.
I wish that Democrats could have unified and countered the SOTU lie fest by doing town halls yesterday, instead of holding up tiny signs that were laughed at.
It is going to be up to us, the people, to throw out the billionaires.
Please, Congressional Democrats, do town halls, get on social media, scream it out what is coming.

(80,540 posts)What was with those little black signs?
I did not watch that lie fest, but was disappointed to see those signs. They looked like they were bidding at an auction rather than making good trouble.
Maybe they thought anything more obvious would get them ousted?

(10,338 posts)That is supposed to be the answer?
And Democrats did all of your suggestions -- back when it actually mattered -- before the Election and yet Americans still chose to vote for this disaster despite all our warnings.
Words mean nothing at this point. If words mattered, Trump would have never been elected in the first place. The people that need to be persuaded have shown they will only be persuaded when they are directly negatively impacted, which is already taking place and will only get worse from here on out.
Maybe one of these days they'll believe us when we tell them the stove is hot rather than needing to find out for themselves by touching it...

(1,107 posts)Geography is our problem. We have to start expanding out in the red zones of this country, and town halls in the areas that will be hurt by MAGA opportunism is a good place to start.

(1,107 posts)MAGA is working to weaken us so that we will be easy prey. They couldn't care less about the thousands of patriots who died on the battlefields of WWII to save us from Fascism. They are human fucking garbage.

(69,370 posts)Even if you aren't taking social security yet. Go to ssa.gov, create a login if you don't have one yet, and download your latest statement. It has your earnings record. Save it in a safe place.
That's the only official record of your earnings, which determines your eventual social security benefits.
I fear that Musk's 19 year olds may "delete" our social security records, by accident or on purpose.

(23,185 posts)I have increases in utilities, house and car insurance, property taxes. If the bastards stop SS payments, I have some savings to live on for awhile. Won't take long to run through. I'll try to help where I can, when I can until I can't.

(1,107 posts)I always planned under the assumption that SS could go away at some point. It's been obvious for a long time that the Fascist Right was going to attack SS and Medicare at some point. Simply because, the funds going into those programs would be shifted to the coffers of the billionaires.
Likewise, they've got their eyes on any money you might have squirreled away in IRAs and 401Ks. One way they will siphon that off is to use the health care industry predators to milk that money away from you once you get into your "golden years".

(24,217 posts)It's basically to work several more years. Social Security being there for me is the difference between retiring at 63 and at 70. Sure, I could probably still retire at 66 or so, but I would be going without and not doing the things my wife and I want to do, like travel. And I will be better off than most.
No social security for millions will mean working until you die.

(60,210 posts)If Social security stops being paid out, are those of us who get our payments stopped then immediately relieved of being forced to pay in?

(8,871 posts)My husband is a year and a half from retiring at 70. If he doesn't get Social Security, and mine stops, I don't know what we're going to do, since his pension alone won't pay the bills. Of course there are milliions of others in the same boat or worse.
The least the bastards could do is stop deducting the Social Security tax from his paycheck, but somehow I doubt that will happen.
