Since they are untouchable (as long as they behave themselves), they are not beholden to the person or party that appointed them. And, over time, justices see enough that they tend to become more just.

Of course there are some notable exceptions - Thomas and Alito being two of them.

It's extremely naive to believe that a miniscule Facebook clip of an extended exchange between a group of people, which doesn't include the person in question, is representative of the reaction of the excluded person.

What is posted in that clip was her reaction after she smiled at him. She smiled while he was addressing her directly, her personally, face-to-face. That's what I was talking about, and I know what I saw.

There's no referant to account for her expression afterward. She could have been reacting to his odor at that point. It's entirely up for interpretation.

In my opinion, all of her facial expressions look fake and as if she's in pain. She is, after all, a Republican.

I've watched the full video of Trump shaking hands with the Generals (or whoever they were) then the Supreme Court members over a dozen times now, and I don't see her facial expression ever come close to a smile. She keeps a very stoic look on her face the whole time except for when she responds to Trump saying thank you by apparently saying thank you back. Anthony Kennedy who was beside her gave Trump a big smile. Oh, and the extended exchange between Trump and Barret lasted less than 2 seconds.

I don't know what else to say. If you think that was a smile, then that is what you saw and that is fine. However, I have yet to find a single other person online who thought she smiled at him.

Any "clips" of the program. I turned the television back on in hopes that the ordeal was over only to find out that he wasn't quite finished making his victory lap out of the chamber.

So what I watched wasn't an after the fact clip. It was the actual exchange as presented on live television.

I believe the right assumed she'd fall in line on every decision, and (at least) this time she followed the law. The Constitution is pretty clear on this; Congress allocates the funds and the executive does not have the privilege of deciding not to use them as directed. Barrett will receive blow back for this; you can count on that. The real question is what she does next time. Will she cave to pressure? I suspect she will, but I hope I'm wrong.

I almost think Russia has been playing the long game, compromising person after person in the GOP and on strategically chosen judges, ever since they stared with T in 1987. T got their names from Putin who certainly has kompromat on some of the judges in the pool that the Heritage foundation gave T.

This latest ruling will have little practical impact, and will likely be undone as other cases are winding their way through the system that challenges the President's power to spend monies where he wants. In somewhat similar cases Biden lost those SC cases where it was Congressional power vs Executive power, but with T in there I am certain it will go the other way, This latest ruling was a bone to fool the public and media into thinking the SC still calls balls and strikes. ACB is in on the scheme so she was free to vote to uphold the lower court ruling for now.

Though perhaps these so-called 'Christians' failed to consider that maybe a justice, who hails from a Catholic majority city, herself a product of a devout Catholic family,

just wasn't ready to be party to Trump's act of world genocide, and on Ash Wednesday, no less.

Which is not to excuse Barrett for being part and parcel to other reich wing ratfuckery. Of which there was aplenty,

she has been involved with, she is NOT in the mold of Alito, Gorsuch, Thomas, and Kavanaugh.

She is not blindly devoted to a particular ideology whose personal beliefs will twist the Constitution's interpretation to conform to those personal beliefs, as her male counterparts on that court do.

In other words, she will try to separate her personal bias and prejudices when interpreting cases before the court. The Alitos' and Thomas' have absolutely no problem making rulings based on their own prejudices rather than an honest interpretation of the Constitution.

At least that is my observation.

enough about the evolution of justice David Souter but I would assume George Bush Sr. thought he was appointing a conservative. Thankfully, it didn’t work out that way. Things are different today. The Federalist Society acts as the gatekeeper of the Supreme Court, and it’s hard to see how someone with an open mind could wiggle in past that gatekeeper. Hugo Black had been a member of the KKK, and he became one of the most liberal justices in the Court’s history. So, maybe there’s hope.
