Explanation
IMDb was founded in 1990 by Col Needham, who posted his movie-listing software to a USENET film discussion group.
Needham incorporated IMDb in January 1996 with volunteers as shareholders.
Amazon paid $55 million for IMDb and two other companies.
In a press release, Jeff Bezos said that the acquisition would support Amazon's eventual entry into online video sales.
IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV, and celebrity content.
IMDb also owns Box Office Mojo, which reports box office figures for current films and older films.
Needham has said that he was excited to join forces with Amazon because of their similar passion for books
