(Bloomberg) -- US measles cases jumped by a third over the past week, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, a worrying sign in the outbreak thats already linked to two deaths.
New Mexicos health department listed Friday that an adult who had died and then tested positive for measles had succumbed to the disease, though the states medical examiner has yet to confirm the cause of death. If it was caused by measles, it would be New Mexicos first such fatality in at least 40 years, according to the CDC.
US cases since the beginning of the year rose by 58 to 222 across 12 states, the CDC reported Friday, and 38, or 17% of those confirmed cases, have led to hospitalization.
Texas, the hardest-hit state with the first US reported death in a decade, reported 198 cases on Friday, 39 more than its last update on March 4. And New Mexicos confirmed cases are now at 30, an increase of 20 from its prior report. All of New Mexicos cases have been in Lea County, which abuts Gaines County, the epicenter in Texas.

1923: Measles killed my mothers young brother. The doctor spent the night with toddler Billy, but the doctor could not save him.
Go to a cemetery of that time period and you will see the graves of many small children.
Early 1950s: Measles cause my young brother to lose his hearing.
The siblings did not have lasting effects. but that does not lessen the pain of loss of a child in one generation and loss of hearing in the next generation

(4,123 posts)So we can expect mumps and rubella cases to increase soon, too?
I remember the horror from many years ago when a neighbor contracted rubella while pregnant. That poor baby was born with so many congenital defects including heart disease, microcephaly, blindness and more. He only lived a few months.

(15,771 posts)I am just curious if it's the same measles we were vaxxed against in the 70s or a new, more deadly form? I know it can be a fatal disease, just curious if it's worse now or anything?
Interestingly enough, I had my titrates done before I got a job with a after school club, so I am covered as far as I know...
