Former SSA commissioner Martin O'Malley was just on Nicolle Wallace. He said that;
1. Entire SS departments are being gutted. Workers are being offered cash, being offered to be paid until the end of the year if they retire now, or be fired. What Musk wants to do is make SS ineffective. Wants to cause delays in people getting benefits, wants to cause delays in people who are applying for disability to be delayed so long that they die by the thousands. Musk wants to tell the people that SS isn't working, he wants the people to turn against SS.
2. Musk's cyber punks are hacking into the SS computers, getting into everyone's personal information, including people who were given new SS numbers under the witness protection program.
3. Private equity people are nosing around SS right now. These vulture capitalists are the people who swoop in after a company is gutted and they scoop up the good shit that is left. In other words these vulture capitalist people will be the ones to privatize SS, to take its 2.7 trillion dollar fund.
This is happening now, and if anyone wants to say he/she never believes anything I post, he/she is pushing right wing talking points.
Have at me, say I am a doom and gloomer, but I am just repeating what a former SSA commissioner just said, I am just repeating what Bernie Sanders is saying all over the country.
"Delays are going to happen sooner rather than later," Martin O'Malley.
Democrats need to do town halls like Bernie Sanders is doing before it is too late. The people need to revolt at what is happening right now to SS.
TIME MATTERS.

(31,026 posts)O'Malley said that there were delays back when he worked there under President Biden and the Magat House cut funds to SS back then, but Magats are making deeper cuts right now.
O'Malley said that people are going to die waiting for benefits, waiting to be approved for disability.
Waiting for the Doom and Gloom police to show up because I am fired up.

(39,946 posts)Clicking on their name takes you to their profile page.
I want to give an example, but I can't use my own profile page. So let's just say that I decided to "ignore" NJCher, okay?
I click on your name and it takes me to your profile. so this is what I see:

Over on the upper right is a tab for "Ignore" and that's where you click. DU will give you another page and you'll be asked to confirm the name of the person you're ignoring, and that's it. You will never receive replies or emails from the ignored person.
Also you can change your mind later and remove names from your Ignore list. When I served on the MIRT group over a year ago, I had to do that, but once I was off MIRT, I started a new Ignore list. I hope this helps.

(407 posts)Elon should be taught a lesson about American fortitude. Kindly explain to him how SS is taking care of many of our parents and grandparents, and perhaps show him and his little band of cyberpunks how we Americans love and enjoy seeing our parents and grandparents happy and healthy. Maybe we can show them how we dont like or parents and grandparents feeling sad, worried and unhealthy. Maybe we can explain to Elon and his little computer kittens how we treat our elders.

Congress has passed legislation to protect Social Security, such as the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023.
Congress is responsible for making sure that the trust funds that support Social Security remain healthy.
Congress must also ensure that Social Security benefits keep up with inflation and Americans' expenses.
Federal law protects Social Security benefits from most private debt collectors.
Social Security benefits are generally exempt from garnishment and bank levies from private creditors.
The Social Security Act of 1935 established a system of federal old-age benefits. The Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 repealed two provisions that reduced monthly benefits. The act was signed into law on January 5, 2025.
Justice matters.
(9,263 posts)I think if he does that (he tells the cabinet secs. to do his dirty job in the hopes he won't get in jail, and they do it), he can ignore any "Act" he wants.
Maybe he is certain Dems will never win another election... so he is above all laws?

(3,457 posts)...sadly, that the SSA is being stripped of critical staff, effectively hollowing out an agency that was already understaffed. This is a deliberate effort to make SSA fail, thereby cynically destroying our nation's confidence in one of the most successful and vitally important programs ever run by the U.S. Government. The toll in human lives and suffering will be incalculable if not stopped.
So, you are exactly right. It is being gutted.

I don't see how they are very interested in what voters or protesters think or do. They are doing what they want, regardless of public opinion or consequences.
And BTW...gop has wanted to privatize or eliminate SS for decades and I doubt we are going to be able to count on gop elected officials to moderate the WH on this.

(2,937 posts)that this seems to be what will happen. Enough is enough. Americans have it in their DNA to revolt against the oppression that is being forced upon them. Politicians are needlessly, out of cruelty and greed and nothing else, ruining peoples lives. Americans are funny about not putting up with that. Funny how trump and the muskrat might be the thing that brings us together.

(42,286 posts)I read most of it. The thing is, though, that Russia has never had a populace that is accustomed to democracy. It's way different here. There will be lawsuits filed to stop this. There is no way they can take a program into which we paid and change the terms. That is not going to happen, however, don't mistake me: they can still cause a lot of destruction.
Also, fortunately, we have some signs that the SC is turning on trump.

(9,347 posts)when my parents' or my aunt's payments are affected, I wonder what my reaction will be to my Christian Nationalist, uber-conservative sister. She will attempt to mollify with the typical easy statements -- "I'm sorry this happened to you" -- but she will never have regrets for enabling it by voting the way she has over the last decades. She may even try to deflect through willful ignorance -- "I didn't know this would be the result" -- when our older relatives and I knew this was a GOP goal for decades.
I guess if things get bad enough, then my sis might have to finally move our mother from her tiny trailer park home into my sister's neo-Victorian mansion on a golf course in a gated community, just a mile or so away.

Worse, those charged with their protection may be targeted too. Think about that before you decide the money is worth it.
So do the bidding of tramp and musk and take a chance on harm or worse to yourselves or people close to you.

In any case the Democrats need to get very, very proactive instead of waiting until it is too late. I don't know who can intervene at this point, but you'd think SOMEONE could do more than propose town meetings or public marches. It seems quite clear that the coup planners expect us and the Democratic party to play softball by those rules. They are not going to play by any rules at all and have already stolen or dismantled significant portions of OUR government. Congress may not be sitting on their hands but it sure looks as if they are.
I am worried that the plan is to jump so far into the deconstruction that legal response will at best be academic exercises if not completely moot. That is what I believe they are doing.
Closing the government down by stopping the budget vote won't really help, even if it is the thing Congress has to do.
The mad Pirate King and his flunkies will go right on pillaging.
Until a judge has him handcuffed for mass murder through enforced neglect I don't see him stopping. I suspect they planned the entire sequence of disruptive chaos through setting so many brushfires they overwhelm the system of checks and balances.

Question: To those, like me, who live on our SS checks, what are you planning... or are you planning yet... on what to do when those checks do not come in? Do you, like me, see no way to plan? I can't put more than 200 in a savings account without having to pull it back out at the end of the month. How in the hell do you save up any cushion, living on Social Security? We've cut to the bone here, and are only eating one meal a day. How are you guys handling it?
