(835 posts)....by Canada...I, for one will join them, much as I love a good bourbon, I will switch to Scotch..

(32,199 posts)I'm an old scotch drinker, and I don't think I could ever acquire a taste for bourbon at this late date. Even a good-quality bourbon would be wasted on me. Now, if trump and his golf courses manage to fuck up things with the scotch trade, I'm in trouble...

Why the fuck have I been funding the state that gives us Mitch and Rand? Fuck them.

(71,534 posts)It's called Woodinville. They also make a rye whiskey. (Not crazy about it; I've never liked rye). And a special bourbon aged in port casks. Not as good as their flagship bourbon, but give it a try.
Washington is a Blue State. We'll be happy to sell you some excellent bourbon.

(13,709 posts)The founder's father was a Pittsburgh area Tavern Keep and a Democratic State legislator.
A quick google search (10 minutes) failed to turn up any of the RWNJ/MAGA warning signs.
It's a rather small company too, which is important to me.
It's a Monongahela style rye - so if you're ised to Bulleit or similar ryes with eucalyptus notes and a grassy nose, this may take a glass or two to acclimate to.
It's a darker flavor profile with more baking spice and molasses profile. The six-year-old cask strength is heaven, but I've only ever found it in Bristol and an indie liquor store in Philly.
The BIB is really really good, and the standard is good. I've never had the various finished whiskey, bit a year in a port or vermouth barrel can't hurt, I suppose.
Looking at the product list online, I don't see the 6Y cask strength, so I guess it was a limited production run or is now a distillery only release.

All their whiskeys shine in Manhattans and Old Fashioneds.

(6,860 posts)just to note though, they do have the 6 yr old available for delivery in PA. $70... not bad. I always keep Bulliett rye in the house... it'd be nice to switch it up. I used to buy a bottle of single malt on my birthday every year. Might start that up again early this year.
Thanks for the whiskey tip!

(13,145 posts)Something I did not know until all this, is that Kentucky Bourbon is actually sold to Canada on consignment meaning they only get paid when it is sold, so now that it is taken off the shelves it will not be sold until tariffs are gone.

(108 posts)Eby "said the widening of the ban to cover all alcohol comes in response (to) the latest news from the United States, including threats of additional tariffs on the dairy industry... He said the escalation comes both because of Trumps newest threats and the recognition that many British Columbians dont want to see American products on shelves anymore." (bolding mine)
I suspect the good will of Canadians is going to be harder to recover than it will be to end the tariff war.

(7,834 posts)And 43 million of their sales are to Canada, or just round that up to 0.5% of the overall annual industry total. Destroyed seems like a stretch but no doubt they arent happy about it.

(21,382 posts)But it's not just Canada getting slapped with tariffs. If the EU and China follow Canada's lead, and they just might, then we're talking huge impact.

(68,882 posts)Bourbon was riding a popular wave anyway, so the market was due to contract. This comes at a bad time for the industry.

(2,829 posts)As the big booze makers lose a huge part of their market. they will probably flood America with relatively cheap whiskey.
That's going to put a strain on local small scale distilleries. Given the tiny margin they work under having to compete with name brands is going to hurt.
So buy and drink local.

(72 posts)One more time...
EVERYONE in Kentucky did NOT vote for Trump, goddammit.
I am so tired of this.
Everyone in Tennessee did not vote for trump.
Everyone in Alabama did not vote for trump.
Everyone in Mississippi did not vote for trump.
On the other hand, people in California voted for trump.
People in New York voted for trump.
People in Washington (state) voted for trump.
Yeah, we're a red state, unfortunately. That does not mean EVERYONE here loves trump.
That does not mean that we should starve or move or die penniless.
It makes me wonder about how united the liberal side is. I came here originally to find like-minded people to commiserate with and to find the real news, yet I am told repeatedly that I don't matter cos I live in the wrong state.
The last presidential Dem candidate that came to Kentucky was Bernie. My son and DIL went and it was an overflow crowd. We have had a couple of Dem candidates that were great. When Booker ran, the DNC took out one ad with all the Dem candidates listed that said "We hope you'll vote for these candidates. Thank you". I didn't know about the woman running against Comer(double UGH) til I got the ballot!!! Hey, DNC! How bout a little help here?
Yeah, I know, Mitch. Well, guess what? I have NEVER voted for him. I have never met anyone in 70 years of living here that said "Boy, that Mitch McConnell, what a guy!" My late cousin, who was a Republican delegate, told my mother at the beginning of Mitch's "career" that he was, and I quote, "dangerous". I don't know how he wins, but the good ol' boys club is alive and well here...could that be it?
So, do liberals living in red states just go away? Do we starve to death? That seems to be what some people want.
And, BTW, Andy Beshear is great. He's calm and fearless. He is talking about running for Mitch's seat. Will he get any help from the DNC? I guess we'll see.
