(4,179 posts)it's got into its head that countries pay for tariffs, not businesses and consumers. That's money that it wants in its pockets. With it, it is always about the money, doesn't care how it gets it.

(9,913 posts)without making the deficit a whole lot worse.
Who says republicans are great on lowering "taxes". They always find a way to either increase fines, licenses, or fees to make up for "taxes". In fact, health insurance payments to for profit health insurance companies are, in my mind, TAXES, that would better be paid to medicare so every American could have health insurance.
Tens of millions of republicans vote for "lower taxes" republicans, but they never "look over there!" to where they are paying double for something else.

(720 posts)This is all about tax cuts. They will use the lie about the tariffs to effectively increase taxes on consumers. This will fund the tax cuts.
I believe they will get away with this for about a year.

(5,048 posts)Who gets the money from tariffs?
A tariff is a tax, usually paid by the customer.
Sometimes by the selling country but not often.
It is not called a tax, but my wallet does not know the difference.
https://tinyurl.com/25cw2c5b
A quick primer on tariffs: Theyre a tax on imported goods clothes, shoes, toys, car parts, appliances, you name it. But the extra money does not come from the foreign companies that produce those goods. The American company doing the importing pays the money to the US Treasury.
(That means the gov't.--- the administration.)
They don't seem to mention that they are collecting more taxes.

(18,614 posts)Fight back. Much as it pays to emphasize the positive, there are times when the only choice is confrontation. In most cases Im very easy to get along with. Im very good to people who are good to me. But when people treat me badly or unfairly or try to take advantage of me, my general attitude, all my life, has been to fight back very hard. The risk is that youll make a bad situation worse, and I certainly dont recommend this approach to everyone. But my experience is that if youre fighting for something you believe in, even if it means alienating some people along the way, things usually work out for the best in the end. (7,847 posts)When they eventually cancel the tariffs the markets shoot back up maybe higher than before. Sell high, make the market go down, buy low, get a 20-30% gain when it goes back up. Thats how all these huge funds and billionaires manipulate it, with some political help of course.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...to specific industries (like construction and manufacturing with these new tariffs) will takes years for those industries to recover from. It isn't just day traders in the market, some investors work from a company's or an industry's actual numbers.

(7,847 posts)Id wager that in 6-9 months when this tariff battle is just a memory that the markets will be back at or near a record high. Even with the most recent decline the markets are still up 7% over the last 12 months.

The United States imported nearly 6 million metric tons of steel from Canada in 2024, roughly 23% of its total steel imports that year. Brazil accounted for 4 million metric tons, or about 16% of all imports. Mexico exported just over 3 million metric tons of steel to the U.S., about 12% of U.S. steel imports.
Steel imports from Canada have hovered between 5 million and 6 million metric tons for over a decade, while imports from Mexico have stayed between around 2.5 million and 4.5 million metric tons.

Canada is the top source of U.S. aluminum imports, followed by the UAE, China, Russia, and Bahrain.
The U.S. imported just over 3 million metric tons of aluminum from Canada in 2024, roughly 58% of total U.S. aluminum imports that year. Since 2010, Canadian aluminum has accounted for between 40% and 60%, roughly, of U.S. aluminum imports.
The UAE is a distant second, supplying 350,000 metric tons of aluminum to the United States, around 9% of U.S. imports.
The United States produced 670,000 metric tons of primary aluminum in 2024, down from 1 million metric tons in 2020 and 1.1 million metric tons in 2019. China is the worlds largest producer of aluminum by far. China pumped out 43 million metric tons of aluminum in 2024. India was a distant second, producing 4.2 million metric tons of aluminum that year.
Just two companies -- Alcoa (NYSE:AA) and Century Aluminum (NASDAQ:CENX) -- are currently producing primary aluminum in the United States across four smelters.

(11,172 posts)ANY United States service member that obeys an illegal order to invade a peaceful, neighboring ally on the orders of a depraved madman is no longer a countryman and immediately an enemy of mine, period. War crimes will be committed and illegal orders given, the choice to obey or stand on oaths will be presented,
We (the side of right and justice) may lose early battles; and I may die in the fight as a consequence; but I will take death with honor over servile obedience to a homicidal lunatic any day. This has escalated to the point where one must decide where their loyalty and allegiance truly lies - to principles or to symbols, to justice or to tyranny, to cooperation or to coercion.
History will eventually celebrate the defeat of Donald Trump and the implosion of the first American Republic. In the aftermath and rebuilding era, please remember to get the Second Constitution correct and build iron-clad walls between the co-equal branches of the republic.
