After his first week on the job, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth banned cultural awareness observances in the military, including Black History Month, Women's History Month and National Hispanic Heritage Month.
"Identity Months Dead at DoD," said the headline on his Jan. 31 announcement.
It turns out there are exceptions to that rule. Celebrations saluting an Irish Catholic holiday, Irish culture and the wearing of green clothing St. Patrick's Day are still on at Joint Base San Antonio and other military installations across the country.
The holiday is Monday, March 17, but the revelry is set to begin before then. A St. Patricks Day party scheduled for Friday at the Gateway Club at JBSA-Lackland will feature a DJ and a spread of corned beef, cabbage and buttered new potatoes.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
