Mar 2025

After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and partly due to a recognition that COVID was affecting minority populations even more badly than it was affecting the white majority, because of long-time unequal access to health care, there was a DEI movement. It reached into the medical research field, but in a very mild way.

Beginning about four years ago, the NIH and other federal agencies started asking for assurances that research projects would make efforts to include women and minorities, both as researchers and as study participants. Private foundations did the same. The goal was to encourage more women and minorities in scientific research, where they've been discriminated against and their health needs overlooked.

Also, it is my opinion that some of the trans activist messaging has backfired.

It's mind boggling that anyone would perceive this as "extreme wokeness" and vote for Trump, but here we are.

Which is why doctors failed to diagnose such conditions as heart disease in women, whose symptoms can be different. When medical research focuses on one gender or one ethnic group and extrapolates medical treatment from that research to the entire population, problems are bound to occur. Whether Republicans want to admit it or not, we are a diverse country and being against diversity means deliberately harming a sizable portion of our population, or in the case of women half the population.

Everything changes in some way, shape or form. It's inevitable. Conservatives will do damn near anything to resist change and to maintain their status quo. That mindset has absolutely no place in science.

...populated almost entirely by people with Ph.D.s I am no longer surprised to encounter stupidity among the highly educated.

The degree in fact requires a rather narrow focus for a period of time.

I once sat a few hours with the great scientist Freeman Dyson at the Institute of Advanced Study and chatted about his life. He famously refused to get a Ph.D. One of the things that amazed me about the conversation was that there was no subject I could raise - and trust me I ended up trying to be obscure as a challenge to see if I could stump him - that he could not field with brilliance. The only thing he wouldn't discuss was some issues with nuclear weapons physics, obviously with good reason. I raised the point innocently, veering from a discussion of his work on the Triga reactor, but he cut me off.

If you read some of his books, you see he understood the world outside of science very well.

For him declining to get a Ph.D. (he was working under Hans Bethe as a young man) may account for his breadth of vision.

I still advised my son to get one, but not at the sacrifice of developing wisdom.

Bought into Trump's horseshit. But for an educated individual to vote for Trump because of 'extreme wokeness and DEI' is frankly unforgivable.

They were annoyed because they couldn't use the word pussy or the 'N" word around the water cooler. Couldn't comfortably ogle their female counterparts and/or used sexist language without complaints of harassment? And God forbid, they couldn't deny that a woman or person of color or different gender identity had the right to work in their field, at their level, be considered equal?

Just own up guys, you are bigots who were willing to throw the country away in a fit of pique. You call yourselves conservatives when you're nothing more than narrow-minded twits. You worry about science (I do too) but never mention how fellow citizens are being and will continue to be cut off at the knees.

“A PhD doesn't guarantee you can tie your shoe.”

I have a double PhD and completely agree with what you’re saying.

Genuine smarts are something we’re born with. Education merely gives us a certificate to hang on the wall when we learn a thing or two from others. Umm, sometimes.

Now — where are my shoes?

This is my career as well, and it is very, VERY, obvious who is more anti-science, and who doesn't give a shit about science at their very best, and more often would destroy the whole enterprise for the in favor of religious edicts and propaganda.

Do science deniers exist on the left? Sadly, yeah. Has there been overreach in academia? Yeah, I think so.

But seriously... who's allies pushed "creation science"? Who's allies banned stem cell research because they mistook (single celled) fertilized eggs for neonates? Who damaged science by pushing us into budget sequestration in 2013, because "starving the beast" was what they wanted? Who has spent the last 30 years denying climate science because they don't like the conclusion?

As a scientist if you pay attention AT ALL, you ought to know who your friends are, and more importantly who they AREN'T.

So long as authority inspires awe, confusion and absurdity enhance conservative tendencies in society. Firstly, because clear and logical thinking leads to accumulation of knowledge ... and the advance of knowledge sooner or later undermines the traditional order. - Stanislav Andreski

If you are experiencing hardship due to Musk/Trump policies, and you voted for Trump, then I truly don’t know what else to tell you. Many people like us had been trying to warn you until we were blue in the mouth about what would happen if Trump got in, but you dismissed us as woke leftists out of touch with reality and real American voters, so now we‘re supposed to feel sorry for you and act like we’re shocked about what happened to you? Why should we listen to you? You didn’t listen to us and I suspect that nothing we would have said would have made any difference. We could even try to explain to you how we’re all suffering, too, while Trump/Musk put all of the progress that we have made as a country over the last 80 years to the torch, but you don’t care, because you don’t care about others, just yourself. So, now we’re going to regroup and try to salvage what we can, but in the meantime, it’s probably best that you know as little as possible about our activities. Good luck and God help us all.

Don't claim to believe in science when you think that it is okay to treat groups of other members of our species as if they were somehow inferior.
DEI has nothing to do with giving people jobs that they can't do, it is about giving jobs to the best qualified without regard to disability, gender, color etc.

Who could have predicted that the party which based most of their power on feeding people poorly crafted lies which bolstered their previously held convictions, but which ran counter to reality; who could have predicted that this party would not value science?

Make it make sense.
