Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsBernie demonstrates how to speak to a MAGA. I implore you to watch and learn.
You don't talk to Charlie Kirk or Steve Bannon or Michael Savage. You don't talk to high paid MAGA racists to try to win them over in a debate. You don't invoke Ronald Reagan. You don't talk about bi-partisanship.
You do none of that. You talk directly to the people. And you talk about their economic struggles directly. This is how Democratic politics have to be done in this dark age.

(58,283 posts)You "implored" me, so I watched the whole 13 minute video. You lost a lot of credibility with me.
I saw your standard Bernie stump speech and him getting interviewed by Anderson Cooper on CNN. That's it. I didn't see him talk to a single MAGAt. MAGAts don't go to Bernie rallies and they don't watch CNN. So how the fuck is anything he's saying reaching Trump's MAGA base, let alone flipping it?
This video was posted by a no-name YouTuber with a clickbait headline hoping to get subscribers. That guy in the MAGA hat featured in the video thumbnail is nowhere in the video itself. Nor is any other MAGAt. That's very dishonest.
Meanwhile, the guy you have been on a tear bashing, Governor Newsom, actually had MAGAts listening to his podcast because he had their guys on. They actually heard Newsom say California only has higher taxes on the rich, not the working class, and that we have greater opportunities than other states because of that.
How about you stop bashing Democrats? Bashing Dems is certainly not going to "FLIP MAGA."
Yavin4
(37,182 posts)Did you not see how he interacted with MAGA voters? I'm not the one bashing Democrats. It's Gavin Newsom that bashed Democrats, not me.

These 2 guys views are so closely aligned that its crazy for 2 democrats to be degrading the other ones views
. But evidently thats where we are
Better i say a terrible thing now than end up there later
Btw I support what gavin and Bernie are doing and wish every democratic politician would find their way to fight back
SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)I am not "degrading" Bernie's views. Where the fuck did you get that? I already said in this thread that I agree with what Bernie is saying.
Telling an ally to "enjoy" the camps is not going to prevent us from "ending up there later." We're already there. We have camps right now.
Both you and I support what both Gavin and Bernie are doing. The OP does not support what Gavin is doing. And I too wish every Democratic politician would find a way to fight back. We ALL need to find a way to unite and fight back.

(65,134 posts)SandersTrump voters
(snip)
In an interview with Vox, Schaffner highlighted the fact that SandersTrump voters were much less likely to identify as Democrats than Sanders voters who voted for Clinton or a third-party candidate.[7] According to Schaffner, about half of the voting bloc identified themselves as Republicans or independents.[4] Data from the VOTER survey showed that only 35% of SandersTrump voters voted for Democratic incumbent Barack Obama in the 2012 election; in contrast, 95% of Sanders-Clinton voters voted for Obama in 2012.[1]
Compared to average Democratic Party voters, SandersTrump voters were much more conservative on racial and social issues. Over 40% of SandersTrump voters disagreed that white people have advantages, compared to less than 10% of Sanders voters who voted for Clinton.[7] Compared to the average Sanders voter, SandersTrump voters tend to be white and older. The CCES survey showed that only between 17% and 18% of SandersTrump voters identified themselves as ideologically liberal, with the rest either identifying as moderate or conservative.[7] In the VOTER survey, SandersTrump voters rated minority groups less favorably than Sanders-Clinton voters; this included Latinos, Muslims and LGBT people.[1] According to both the CCES and VOTER surveys, SandersTrump voters' views on trade policy are largely similar to typical Democrats, despite Sanders' relative opposition to free trade deals.[1][7]
Jeff Stein of Vox suggested that many SandersTrump voters may have been Reagan Democrats who were white and pro-union.[7] Political scientist John M. Sides suggested that many SandersTrump voters were unlikely to support Clinton in the first place.[1] Writing in RealClearPolitics, Tim Chapman, executive director of conservative advocacy group Heritage Action, suggested that both Trump and Sanders had strong populist appeal, especially to working-class voters in the heartland, despite their starkly different policies.[9] In 2020, Schaffner suggested that Sanders' appeal to SandersTrump voters in 2016 was due to his outsider status, his populist policies, and his targeting of issues which affected groups of people Trump attempted to court in his 2016 campaign.[4]

SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)And the Wiki exerpt you posted talks about Sanders voters flipping to Trump, not the other way around.
If someone has figured out a documented strategy that successfully flips MAGAts to Dems, I'd love to see it. That's why I watched that OP video. It was billed as showing that. But it didn't.
Uncle Joe
(65,134 posts)Now many if not most of them know that *rump was always an oligarch and only pretending to care about the average American worker.
The oligarchs came out from behind the curtain front and center at *rump's inauguration, and that's a primary driving force behind the energy coming from Bernie's "fighting oligarchy" tour.
I suppose that it's mathematically possible that absolutely no MAGAs have seen the light, with all that's happened since *rump reoccupied the White House, but extremely unlikely.

(4,161 posts)Look, if you believe every red state he spends time in and none of the Republicans have attended any of them...then you don't believe it. Why you imagine none have attended is on you, as I said...what you believe. That is in no way an insult to you.
Sanders will continue across the country, that much I am certain..one day, you may see the proof you are seeking.

(58,283 posts)I am not asking you to prove a negative. I am asking you why you think MAGAts show up to Bernie rallies.
I am fine with Bernie doing his rallies. I think they motivate our base.
My issue is with the ongoing Newsom bashing for his efforts at getting through to MAGAts, and the dishonest way this video was described in the OP.

(4,161 posts)They all wear hats as identifiers??
If you don't believe, as I have said twice now, that throughout all his town halls thus far, none have voted for Trump/MAGA, then you won't believe it.
You are asking me to prove a negative.., he is traveling in red states. You don't believe, don't believe it.
I think we have taken this as far as we can.
Wiz Imp
(9,996 posts)And the place he went to in Nebraska was the "Blue Dot" of Omaha. Michigan & Wisconsin are not red states. Trump won there (barely) in 2024 & 2016, but those are the only 2 times in the past 35 years that a Republican has won either of those states. Harris won in both cities in Wisconsin which Bernie visited
questionseverything
(11,840 posts)Nm you were already on that list
SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)If you said you thought that some of Bernie's points might work on some MAGAts, I would not be disputing that. But that's not what the OP said.
Wiz Imp
(9,996 posts)Nebraska is a red state, but Omaha is a blue city. Harris won Omaha which enabled her to win an electoral vote there. Harris also won in Kenosha and Altoona/Eau Claire Wisconsin. That's the first 3 stops on his tour. Trump did win in Warren Michigan but it was close - that is a slightly red area, not a super red one.

SunSeeker
(58,283 posts)And yes, Bernie was asking questions, not the audience. Bernie likes to use the Socratic method. It can be an effective way to get your point across.
But this was not a townhall situation where scared constituents were there asking what was happening, like some House Reps have gotten when doing townhalls:

Make no mistake, these folks arent dumb, they know Republican policies hurt them but they are content with voting the way they do because they dont want our polices if they benefit those that they dont like or believe deserve help.
