Texas Gov. Rick Perry urged school districts to review their plans to ensure they are prepared to respond to incidents such as the horrific shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday.
David Thweatt, superintendent of the tiny Harrold school district in northwest Texas, believes his staff is ready.
Besides special locks and security cameras, an undisclosed number of staff members and teachers carry concealed handguns.
Thweatt said the "guardian plan," which drew international attention when it was implemented in 2008, definitely enhances student safety.
"Is that 100 percent? No," Thweatt said Friday in a telephone interview. "Nothing is 100 percent. But what we do know is that we've done all we can to protect our children."

(18 posts)In TX it is illegal for a citizen with a concealed handgun permit to carry a gun on a school campus. This is state law. How did they get around this?

(515 posts)that they either deputized the teachers or the school district formed it's own police department and the teachers are considered LEOs.
I hope to see this moving to other schools in Texas. Having a kindergartner and a wife that is a kindergarten teacher, I think that I would feel much more comfortable knowing that there were responsible armed people protecting the school.

(18 posts)I just researched Tx law and found this is allowed by Tx penal code section 46.03, Places Weapons Prohibited. Basically it says if the school district or institution gives its permission, it is allowed.
I personally would feel much safer if a licensed peace officer of the state of Tx was stationed on school campus.
