A thought on a way to curb gun related tragedies...

This idea just kinda popped into my head and I don't know that I've fully fleshed it out, but I thought I'd share my initial thought with all you smart people here.

How about anyone who want to own a gun has to serve in the military, as a militia member, for a tour of duty. Militia members have to go through basic training like any other military member where they are taught gun safety and they get to see first hand the devastation such a weapon can do. If they decide they can't handle the training or duty, they can leave the militia and they forfeit their ability to own a gun. Serve your time and you get to register as a gun owner and purchase your weapon from the militia. I'd be willing to bet that most people would say it wasn't worth it.

If we have a sudden influx and growth in military to the point that we are bursting, we can put them to work on our infrastructure much like the civilian corps did way.

The biggest flaw that I see in this is that we have such terrible care of our veterans and serving members for things like PTSD. That could in turn backfire and create other tragedies. That could be mitigated to a degree by a full pych eval before out processing from serving.

I dunno...I'm just spitballing and not sure of other implications that might arise. It seems like with the proper planning and implementation it could work, but I could very well be wrong.
