I wonder if Trump will show up or is he afraid he might not get an exemption or for sure he will get massive protests from Canadians.

(114,254 posts)that they have committed no other offenses and likewise every other place they have lived since. At least that was how it was handled about 15 years ago when a neighbor of mine (with a 30 yo DUI- sans other offenses) tried to go to Canada.
Of course, Trump is different, so I guess they will give him special dispensation. But, it should at least provoke some media questions, so there is THAT!

(65,757 posts)I had a DUI in the early 80s and it was no issue getting into Canada in the late 80s and several times in the 90s. I havent had the opportunity to travel outside of the US in the 25 years. Jobs have all had local travel and finances did not permit long distance travel. ,

(114,254 posts)Prior to December 2018, if a visitor could prove it had been more than ten years since the sentence was finished, and he or she had no other arrest history, Canadian authorities may disregard an old DUI and grant the person entry into the country. This policy has since changed!
My neighbor was older, had no intention of driving, but was going with a group and it took six months to get all the documentation (and a lawyer hired to expedite a decision from Canada)... He was successful, but very embarrassed because everyone traveling with him ended up finding out what the issue was. And this was a youthful 30-year-old DUI from a routine traffic stop... (yes, I agree DUIs are serious before anyone reams me out, but I believe this guy was honest in saying it was borderline alcohol level and he had not committed any traffic offense--just bad luck to be caught up in a routine check shortly after he graduated from college).
I am pretty sure Canada passed this more rigorous restriction in response to similar in the US, so we've been screwing ourselves vis-a-vis Canadian relations for some time.

(60,320 posts)In Canada, once an election is called, then expenditures are strictly limited. It is expected to be called this week. So CONs are pumping out their garbage as fast as they can.

(6,942 posts)permits a host nation to declare a foreign government official persona non grata within a reasonable time frame. By doing so, the host nation would no longer be obligated to respect that individual's diplomatic immunity.
At the very least, this would relieve many countries of the excessive financial burden and expense of hosting him.

One topic which needs to be discussed is Canada hosting more nuclear weapons imo. They can do it privately too, it doesn't need to be announced.
Bev54
(13,477 posts)Canada provides an exception because he is a felon. The country hosting is allowed to invite another party to join and Carney decided Zelenskyy is who he invited
