Time to shut down Starlink, hopefully for good.

(5,316 posts)But I can't find any operating in the states yet except Viasat and Hughes. Both of those are super old satellite technology, very slow, and hugely expensive.
I keep hoping for a Starlink competitor so I can boot the Space Nazi out of my connectivity.

(9,212 posts)We don't use star link and we are fine. We have cable internet I think which is not too bad. They have fiber here now but it's still worse in most areas. I have been thinking of a Subaru Impreza which has it installed, but you don't have to use it. I wonder if I should pick something else due to that. I have no internet connection in my current 20 year old, relatively low mileage, 6 cylinder car which I would keep forever if it weren't for the rust 😁
In Canada I think Ontario, and Alberta and maybe other provinces have cancelled their Star link contracts so they must have a good alternative.
I looked briefly and it looks like Hughsnet is cheaper, here is a comparison link. But maybe it is not as effective depending on where you are.

(9,826 posts)movie one night when I had out of town visitors. I stopped HughesNet after 3 weeks. It wasn't the weather interfering, either. It was just a LOUSY and expensive service.

"The drop occurs even though Hughesnet is now offering faster internet speeds through its new Jupiter 3 geostationary satellite. The companys internet plans are also cheaper than Starlink. But on the downside, Hughesnet can reduce download speeds once the 100GB or 200GB data threshold has been passed."

(5,316 posts)No thanks. Hughes is bleeding customers because their service is so shitty. Starlink is fast and dependable but I don't want to do business with the company.

(5,316 posts)Comcast is right across the road but they refuse to run the cable to my side, even if I pay for it.

(9,212 posts)It is terrible that the US and other countries handed over a monopoly to a con artist psycho for the other mode. I hope someone else provides something equivalent soon. I am so glad we dont have to use it. Canada must have something better because at least two provinces have canceled all of their Star Link contracts.

(5,316 posts)It's just soured to me now because of Eloon's antics and callous attitude about the damage he's doing. Well, and the fact he's a Nazi sympathizer.

(9,212 posts)a monopoly and was not given huge amounts of money from the US and us, the citizens. I would never use it for any reason and tg we have a good alternative. I think, like every other thing the con artist has gotten involved with, he had nothing to do with it being good etc.

(60 posts)No technology will resolve the fact a geostationary satellite sitting 23k miles out is going to perform slower than a low earth orbit satellite sitting a couple hundred miles up. It's not technology, it's physics and the speed of light.

(9,212 posts)I have been looking at Subaru Impreza which has it available and I am not sure about it now.. but I would not have to use it etc. I asked if they can remove it from the car, lol.

I started with California because that's where I live. While traveling through rural areas in the state I see fixed wireless dishes everywhere.
Frankly, anyone who is connected to the electric grid ought to have high speed internet too. There's no technical barriers to this, only political. Stringing fiber optic cable is a lot easier than the original rural electrification projects of FDR's New Deal.

(13,680 posts)I have somewhat clunky DSL and have to fight with the provider every year about raising the price. I had started looking at Starlink a couple of years ago but decided against it when Elmo aligned himself with tRump. I'd love to find an alternative internet service and tell my current provider to take a hike.

I checked the speed recently 264mbps download. Ping of 41.

(1,056 posts)I have a feeling that Starlink isn't going anywhere. Visit an RV campground and it's the only system you'll see....everywhere.

(9,212 posts)Support another company to provide the same thing. Nothing will be done otherwise. If I get a Subaru I won't be using it. I have a 20 year old car and I don't have any internet etc. in it. I use free internet everywhere and my own provider when possible if out. I have a garmin gps I believe they have their own satellite system called GPS for the US and Canada. I will continue using that in whatever car I get.
