Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI almost lost my shit at the doctor's office today.
Cataract surgery yesterday.
Drugs are wearing off, and now I'm miserable.
Long wait at the follow up visit this morning.
Waited for the doctor over an hour in the little room.
A non-related skin condition is putting me in pain.
Long distance vision is beautiful, but I can't read up close worth a shit.
Sitting in the little room with my wife waiting for the doctor. For some reason, I started ranting about Musk and Trump to my spouse. I got loud and started cursing up a storm. Wife was putting her fingers to her lips, trying to shush me. That made me worse.
Just a few short months ago, things seemed good. NOW WE HAVE SEVERAL DOZEN MILLION PEOPLE WONDERING IF THEIR FUCKING SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS ARE GOING TO ARRIVE.
We have a group of quasi-governmental officials breaking into a business that is only tangentially related to the United States government. This group is named after a sketchy crypto coin (DOGE) established initially by everyone's favorite Nazi (Musk).
We have an ugly, evil, insane motherfucker with the world's most punchable face, putting fear into the hearts of everyone who is paying any sort of attention. This fucker is getting up on stage swinging around a fucking chainsaw that he is barely able to lift, while people are already dying worldwide because of his actions.
We have the world's biggest clown show in the White House.
I'm raging, but my rage is impotent. I'm 66 years old, I'm fucking fighting mad, but I don't know who to punch.
I have not felt my temper rear it's ugly head like this since I was in my teens.

(31,132 posts)I used to be able to see close but not far. The doctor told me that after the surgery I would be able to see far but not as well close, unless,
They do 1 eye one way and the other eye the other way. Then after time the 2 eyes coordinate, and I would be able to see both far and close.
I told the doctor that I will buy cheater glasses.
Let it go. Keeping it inside is no good. I'm 77 and I live among the Magats and I can't wait to pester the hell out of them. I golf with a retired school superintendent who voted for Krasnov. (2,937 posts)My surgeon decided, all on his own, to make the second eye (done two years after the first) for closer-up than the first
supposedly so I could read without glasses. Stupidest idea ever and I would never have chosen it. Im going to be putting my glasses on and taking them off constantly while reading and also keeping track of various household things (dogs, conversing with spouse, etc.)? My regular eye doctor also seemed puzzled and displeased with this solution and asked if I wanted an Rx that would enable me to always wear my glasses, which we did.
Pretty mad I never had a choice.

(38,166 posts)which didn't end up being really good enough. I think she's 20/20 in one eye, but less in the other. She can still pass the driver's license test (I think), but she is increasingly having difficulty seeing. And she refuses to wear reading glasses - and it is surprising how frequently she asks me to read something because she can't read it. Drives me nuts. I think she's getting to the point where she is willing to get glasses - and at least they won't be as expensive as they used to be. Her vision was so bad pre-cataract surgery that we had to get very pricey high index lenses. Unfortunately, even though I kept telling her that she needed to get glasses before the end of 2024, since we weren't getting vision insurance anymore, it wasn't until January that she said, I think I want glasses. Ugh.
I'm going to test out monocular vision when I go diving this summer, by getting that arrangement in my diving mask. That way I won't get permanent surgery and then wish I hadn't.
LisaM
(29,475 posts)I had a slight astigmatism in one eye and the chance for one in the other, so I spent extra on the toric lenses.
Being able to wake up and read and do crossword puzzles in bed, and even watch TV from about six feet away with no glasses or lenses is truly wonderful. I can read the small print on spice labels, and can read paper menus in restaurants. I don't have to stand six feet back from the shelves in the grocery store. It feels like I have a superpower after the increasingly smeary vision I had before.

(1,405 posts)Now my nearsightedness in good eye is completely gone. I can even read tiny, tiny non-contrast print like directions on small bottles, food labels, and yes, shampoo bottles in the shower.
So glad I opted for near vision rather than far vision for cataract surgery. Id hate to carry glasses around all the time.
As an author and avid reader, near and mid vision definitely works best for me. Only need glasses to drive, mostly sunglasses, which we need during daytime anyway to protect our eyes from the sun.
Nice to know Im not alone in my decision I thought I was the only one on the planet who chose near vision rather than far for cataract surgery.

Then she got upset with me because I mentioned it. Ive seen them once since November, but they didnt come to the house. We met at a restaurant and my husband didnt go. (21,605 posts)your cataract is "ripe" and your vision becomes intolerable. Please get regular eye exams, and your eye doctor will let you know when you are ready for surgery. I've had my cataracts for about 10 years before they were ready to be removed. Or, you will seek the surgery when your vision just gets too blurry.
You will not need opiates. I had fentanyl in the surgery suite, but that was only due to the fact that I could not lie flat because of back pain.
You will be given a drug called versed for the surgery, You remain mostly awake, but all you will see is a bright white light. It's actually a pleasant experience.
There is ZERO pain associated with the surgery.
You most likely will have no post surgical pain, except maybe a temporary feeling like you have an eyelash stuck in your eye. Some plain Tylenol will take care of that.
Everything becomes bright and clear after the surgery.
The worst part is one month to 5 weeks of drops 14x per day post surgery.
Good luck!

(6,199 posts)I'm 77. You have a long way to go.
Ha! The eye doctor! Thank you for the opening to "rant." I knew I had cataracts (likely caused or made worse by my cancer treatment drug), so I have had regular checkups once or more a year with my long-time ophthalmologist. My vision has rapidly been getting worse - just since December - so I scheduled a visit to the cataract surgeon in the same office. When the assistant did my pictures, he almost reflexively remarked, "What's this?" Then took a moment to look at the last set of pictures and said, "Oh, nothing's changed since last year."
When I finally met with the cataract surgeon, he was concerned with a fluid pocket on my left retina - the better eye! - that had apparently been there for some time and that my ophthalmologist had NEVER mentioned. The surgeon said that he would not do cataract surgery until that pocket would hopefully resolve, since the surgery could make it worse. He put me on some expensive eye drops that I need to use four times a day (package insert said the usual dose was once a day) and that I needed to return in a month.
I am frightened, pissed, and somewhat saddened by this oversight by a doctor I truly liked and trusted. Now I am not sure how long I have had this issue and whether or not the delay in treatment has done permanent damage. So now my right eye sees through a heavy fog and my left eye is somewhat clear but has trouble focusing (the fluid creates waves).
This, and we still have Trump and Musk.
LuckyCharms
(21,605 posts)I'm a Type 1 diabetic with an inflamed optic nerve. I see a retina doctor regularly, and he told me "I can't see you again until you get your cataracts removed" because he was unable to take decent retina pictures through the cataracts.
I essentially had to wait for the "go ahead" from my retina doctor before I got the surgery, because the only way they can diagnose the cause of the inflamed optic nerve is to wait and see if it blinds you or not. So, I can relate a little to all that you've typed here.

does genuine good for people.
Disaster is awaiting since there wasn't any advance preparation in getting states ready to step into the gaps left wide open in so many different areas of our Economy and our infrastructure by the abrupt shutdown of these programs. I daresay that some serious damage has been done too, and will continue, in closing a lot of these programs down abruptly. A lot of these things are not just a matter of shutting the back door and locking it.
Again, as I say, monitor these doge idiots. Out them in every manner possible. Make sure that their irresponsible actions now will have a heavy price in the future as to their future job prospects. Make sure that their potential new bosses are fully aware of their despicable role in plain gutting of all federal programs w/o any control or say so by us, whom Congress is supposedly supposed to represent. From what I'm hearing, Congress is running away from very dissatisfied voters and refuse to hold anymore town hall meetings.
in the future all about their gutting out of federal programs, w/o any say-so by Congress or anyone monitoring them (no one is obviously, unless Congress steps in).
Small steps to take back control....
-we're close to control of Congress/the House. Continue to support new democratic representatives and bring a breath of fresh air into Congress.
-Resist at every turn, post your remarks, your opinions, don't be afraid...this is still a free Country still and our opinion does matter, believe it or not.
There are, of course, other steps that can be done, but for now, one step at a time seems like good advice. We're still picking our way through the mess that djt is leaving, just in the first month or so of his term. He's a walking disaster area, and FEMA is no longer there to clean up the mess.

(9,212 posts)Although today I was mad at my inr testing company because they have messed things up again. Last year they messed up my billing saying I was not covered etc. It took several phone calls and my insurance company worked it out finally. Now they were going to cancel my account because my doc had not sent a new rx for the testing etc. and had not notified me, I found out because I picked up a robo call about missing my test, which I had already reported.
Eventually spoke to a supervisor who was RUDE and uncaring, who found out that they have received FOUR rx but they were not written the way they liked it. So then I had to call my doc 3x to get them to call them. I wish I got paid for the huge amount of time I have to spend on the phone will all of these people. Apparently an rx now has to be initialed and dated if there are changes. AFAIK there were no changes. It also took them 3 months to properly process my new insurance info/card which I gave them well in advance.
I am going to call my ins and ask if there is another provider I can use instead. Last year I found out I could buy enough test strips for one year and the machine on ebay for less than I pay them.
I am going to ask my doctor if he will let me do this instead, but he may need to be paid too for monitoring it.
Daylight savings is causing me the usual crap, my whole sleep pattern and body is a complete mess now. Because of being on the phone for over an hour I missed a follow up appointment
for contacts which was already postponed for over 6 months for various reasons. It's a good thing I answered the phone though, or my account would have been cancelled! Usually I don't before I have to go out or if I don't know who it is. I never received a letter telling me this which the rude supervisor said was sent.

(5,823 posts)I opted for the Vivity lenses, which give me good distance and mid-field vision, but I need reading glasses for closeup stuff. After a few months I was able to clearly read the computer screen at about 18 inches without the glasses. It took a bit for the brain to reconfigure, especially since I've worn glasses for anything beyond a few feet since grade school. I'm still amazed at the richness of colors after several years of looking through my original-equipment yellowed lenses. White is now REALLY white, and the sky is truly blue and not that muddy color I was used to for so long.
The drops are a pain (and the ones I had did sting a bit when first put in), but follow the schedule and it will be worth it in the end.
Hang in there, and enjoy your new eyes!

(71 posts)Firstly, As you can see (haha) here, you are definitely not alone! We all have good reason to be angry about all this. And I get even angrier at people who aren't paying enough attention to be mad!
Aside from continuing to keep up with all those eye drops, maybe skip the news for a couple of hours and watch a good old comedy film. Because laughter is , if not the best, at least a good medicine. And it reminds me of an Irish proverb: A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book.
But in reading all the comments I'd like to suggest Zinni to those who still need prescription glasses. They have glasses starting at about $8.00 and up to $150 or so. They have a huge variety to choose from and they have all the regular add-ons that are available at any optical store. You simply upload a copy of your prescription and fill in the size you need (there is clear directions on how to get the correct measurements).
I ordered 2 pairs that cost me a total of $25 with shipping and I was happy with the quality and fit. I don't have optical insurance so it was the only way I could afford new glasses. But it's probably cheaper even for some who do have coverage so I figured I would share it here.

(5,794 posts)about cataracts. I am getting there and didn't realize there may be a choice on the vision outcome (near sighted/far sighted)
Saw my doc this week also since I felt some issues after a long journey in an aircraft cabin.
Fortunately I am not compromised enough to warrant surgery although I am progressing towards that. So your experience and the comments on this thread has prepared me for the choices I will face as time goes by. This is something that I knew would probably occur but really never gave it a second thought until recently with the eye compensation evolving.
But dry eyes are certainly an issue on long distance aircraft cabins (and I still wear a mask inside any environment similar to a sardine can).
And yes, I identify with your rage and find it so curious everyone around me is business as usual while this country has been hijacked by madmen and their soldiers.
Inside I am stark raging mad like you but can't exhibit those traits in most environments I pass through in my work and in my transient outside of the house life. I wonder how everyone around me just goes on like business as usual. My business life is a series of very short personal interactions with others so other than short comments at times it is impossible to engage in extensive "outside the immediate environment" conversation.
