Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urged Fox News viewers to buy Tesla stock, calling CEO Elon Musk probably the best person to bet on he had ever met. Lutnick offered the investment advice on Wednesdays episode of Jesse Watters Primetime after host Jesse Watters had delivered a long monologue criticizing the vandalism of Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and charging stations, and protests directed at the company and Musk over his support for far-right politics and wide-ranging budget cuts and layoffs that were happening as part of DOGEs efforts to reshape the federal government.
Watters introduced Lutnick and asked him, How are you interpreting firebombing Teslas? This is so outrageous, replied Lutnick. You probably have the best entrepreneur, the best technologist, best leader of any set of companies in America, working for America, and you have this sort of weird side of the Democratic Party attacking him.
Let me remind you, he is the guy that saved the astronauts, saved the astronauts and hes the guy whos going to build the next generation technology, Lutnick added, presumably referring to NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore, who returned to Earth Tuesday after a nine-month delay on the International Space Station. Williams and Wilmores extra time on the ISS and return has been the subject of a surfeit of misinformation from Musk and the White House, including false claims that President Joe Biden stranded them.
I think if you want to learn something on this show tonight, buy Tesla! Lutnick continued. Its unbelievable that this guys stock is this cheap, itll never be this cheap again. When people understand the things hes building, the robots hes building, the technology hes building people will be dreaming of today and Jesse Watters and thinking, gosh, I should have bought Elon Musks stock! I mean, who wouldnt invest in Elon Musk? You gotta be kidding. Alright, so youre calling the bottom? This is it? asked Watters.

(8,157 posts)This is why the government is not supposed to promote a brand like this. Fucking clown show.
They cried all day about "Picking winners and losers" when it comes to energy policy (including subsidizing Tesla itself!), but they sell cars on the White House lawn and send this coglione out to plug Tesla on Morning Shows. It is to laugh.

(10,865 posts)backwards, redneck, bullying we have in today's local and federal government. It saddens us to see people in charge that have no empathy for others here or abroad, and even worse because it is shoved down our throats on a daily basis.

(16,270 posts)when they would see a Tesla on the road. They'd pull in front of it and switch some stupid aftermarket mechanism on F150s or whatever and blow oily smoke on the car.
Now Teslas and their owner are right up there with their gold plated idol.

I'm trying to think of a coherent defense for Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick urging the public to buy a specific stock tied to the president's top campaign donor.

A member of the Republicans Cabinet, however, was far more direct. As The New York Times noted:
The commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, followed President Trump by supporting Elon Musk, urging people to buy shares in Tesla, Musks car company. Its unbelievable that this guys stock is this cheap. Itll never be this cheap again, Lutnick said Wednesday on Fox News. ... Teslas stock price has plummeted in the last two months as it faces backlash, including protests and vandalism, over Musks role in the Trump administration.
The Cabinet secretary did not appear to be kidding.

Im mindful that breaches of norms and ethical limits have become routine over the last two months, but this was an egregious display, even by 2025 standards.
Right off the bat, lets note that its not the commerce secretarys job to give the public investment advice. But given the relevant circumstances, thats where the problems start, not where they end. Making matters far worse, Lutnick who was confirmed by the Senate and holds an important position of public trust took it upon himself to urge a national television audience to buy a specific stock tied to the sitting presidents top campaign donor.....
If theres a benign defense for all of this, I cant think of it.
