What motivates investors is not always simple. In this instance, Toyota is a stable company that is considered to have little growth potential. Tesla is viewed as having more growth potential. So its a bet on the future to a certain extent.

As noted, its not a bet I would take, but I'm a risk-averse investor.

It wasn't a particularly viable theory in the last 4-5 years that nobody else would develop useful EVs and it's less so now, especially given Elon going way off the deep end.
