(169,592 posts)so the President knows that he'll always have to "work his ass off" for everything does. It's sad when folks refuse to see this has historically been the case in this country.
One can see the example of the trials and tribulations in the movie "Red Tails" that just released. The "ass working" never ceases.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,139 posts)Obama would probably always have to work his ass off. However, in these times I think a lot of people would have to give extra effort to some extent.

(169,592 posts)The GOTV needs to be in high-gear this go-around, even when ironically, the environment makes it appear that he could be handed the 2nd term on a silver platter. I.e., who would have thought that there would be a sequel GOP melt-down?
But as they say, one should NGU!

(34,845 posts)Just because some analysts find an occasional serendipitous connection to something in the past does not mean the past will repeat itself.
We should always be on our guard and not be complacent but I think it's okay to look at Reality and see that Gingrich's momentum is good for us.

(5,995 posts)In 08, we turned out to beat the concept of the previous administration. The vision of a tea bag fueled, Gingrich presidency would not only arouse the left and centrist Dems, it could discourage the 'moral' conservatives.
The idea that people wouldn't come out just to vote against Newt is plain nonsense. The only way that argument works is with someone like Mitt where some (I'm looking at you, Ralph) might argue there was no difference between the parties.

I think 'Newt' will be whipped from all sides. We can, perhaps, knock down some republican notions right along with him. This entire field plays right into our Democratic argument. They're stale, old biscuits waiting to crumble to the touch. It's hilarious to see then dissembling before our eyes before we've even begun to fork in.

(24,937 posts)They shilled for bushie throughout the campaign against Gore, and were responsible for the election being close enough to be handed to their favorite. Now, with Ciizens United, they might be able to do the same for an even more unlikable candidate.

(24,952 posts)On one hand, the thought of Gingrich being even remotely close to winning the Presidency of the United States of America. If the thought of McCain being POTUS would be enough to send a "cold chill" down our spines, the prospect of Newt becoming President should provoke widespread panic.
OTOH he's got so much baggage and bombast that he is more likely to self-destruct before the GE is over and Obama could very well run the tables everywhere but in the deep south (though some polling has suggested that Obama could potentially flip TEXAS if Gingrich were the nominee, so........). Newt is basically a more intelligent, politically saavy male version of Sarah Palin (except on steroids) and people were (rightfully) freaked out about her being a heartbeat away from the Presidency, so Newt would likely scare people away, especially the moderates and indies. Newt's advantages would be that he would excite the Republican "base" but he'd also rally ours as well.
I'm not complacent and I'm sure the Obama campaign isn't either but if anybody could single-handedly blow the chances for the Republicans to win back the WH and Congress in 2012, Newt would be thy person IMHO.

People are not battered and tired. They are angry.
The only thing is that the elected Democrats have failed to respond to this anger and even exacerbated it with pro-Wall Street, pro-Insuricare policies.
The only thing that could make them angrier at this point is a fool like Newt. That will give the 99% something to rally against, not because Obama has been any great shakes. Speaking truth here.
The alternative is a campaign where the Occupy movement (the only real positive momentum out there) is crushed beneath the weight of an election between two center-right candidates. Newt Gingrich places everyone in America to the left of him in solidarity with the 99% because they will not respond kindly to the moral cancer he represents.

(1,005 posts)I just don't see him as a threat. He knows how to blow the dog whistle, which works very effectively in states like SC. However, I can't see him mounting a viable national Presidential campaign. He is too disorganized, lazy, and stupid. He'd rather go cruising in Greece than do the dirty work in Iowa.

(162 posts)His base loves him, but that's only 35% at most. He needs the indys, and they think he's nuts. He's a known racist that has cheated on multiple sick wives and thinks that we should bring back child labor. He's unattractive and doesn't offer any new ideas.
He will lose to Obama with young people, black people, most other minorities and all Democrats. He will do well with white people, mostly in the South. There are almost no signs that he will do well anywhere else.

What Newt does well is appeal to a certain voter. When he tries to expand that, he is done... in a debate or any other format.

(39,166 posts)After Newt is the candidate I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him reacknowledge the threat of climate change. Where's his base going to go, Ron Paul?
Next he'll soften his position on women's rights. With those two bargaining chips he'll grab 10% back from the middle, and he will be formidable.
wtmusic
(39,166 posts)his position will only improve.
He will become a predictable, reasonable conservative who's already established his Tea Party base, with more experience than Obama and a more forceful style.

(10,777 posts)Florida is doubtful. Arizona doubtful.
With Newt as the nominee, there is no way educated suburban Republicans can rationalize their vote. With Mitt, they can pretend they are voting for a "responsible" moderate. With Newt, they have a clear choice. Some of them won't go that far - especially outside the South.

(75,480 posts)he's not going to go further. I'm hoping, that since SC has open primaries, that a lot of the votes were from future Obama voters with the intent of knocking Romney out of first place. Let's hope the rest of the primaries leave him behind. I fear like you that he will do the nastiest campaign ever and probably will even enlist Karl Rove as one of his team.

(5,364 posts)Amongst people I know, all too many will vote for him if he's the GOP candidate. Not because they like him, but because he's running against Barack Obama. They're low-info voters who have an irrational dislike of him. So yes, I am being careful of what I wish for....even if I'd like to think voters will vote with their heads upon seeing nutter Gingrich vs rational Obama.

(68,868 posts)for their miseries, while he blames the first Black President.....
for the entire nation's ills, instead of blaming himself and the
overwhelmingly White elites who have been the ones calling the shots
since forever.
It's easy to figure it out....Newt doesn't want white folks to
figure out whose been screwing them right along with the minorities
in this country.....he doesn't want them to find out the real reason why
they've got barely shit, and won't have shit at all once he's done.
So is he formidable? No.
He's just good at talking to White folks about what they want to hear,
in the way that they want to hear it.....blaming everyone else for their problems
but the real culprits!
and Lack of enthusiasm (as you put it) and all,
has been self-imposed, and if it continues,
then folks will be getting exactly what they deserve,
at the very end of the day!

(25,406 posts)I remember 1980 quite clearly, it was thought that Reagan was a fool who could never get nominated, elected, or re-elected, much less groom an heir apparent that kept the White House for another four years, which might have been another eight years if Iraq's invasion of Kuwait had come a bit later than it did.
However, we have been waiting for a ruinous fight between the establishment Republicons and the tea partiers, and this is what it is starting to look like. The best we can do is try to get our friends in the caucus states to come out heavily for Ron Paul, to deny either of these bozos a first ballot victory. The very best thing that can happen is for one side to blame the other for stealing the nomination, that's the divide and conquer we need.
If Romney got coronated after Florida, he would have many months to make nice with the tea party and the fundies, and that wouldn't have worked to our advantage.
