All production would cease if they didn't accept them

(22,456 posts)...and do not produce ALL their cars in Canada as you imply.
Besides, this is obviously a call for RETAIL boycotts.

(16,567 posts)1) I have lived in SE Michigan my entire life and worked in the auto industry for over 30 years. We live, breathe and die building cars here. I think I understand how it works.
2) According to both the OP and the link, the Canadian Parliament member quoted never mentioned the word retail. I'll take what he said at face value.

(315 posts)in Canada, US and Mexico. Canada not only assembles cars but manufactures a lot of car parts. Those parts are shipped to Canadian, Mexican, American assembly plants and every time a part crosses the border as a single part or partially/completely assembled car there will be a 25% tariff. The tariffs are murder for the Canadian economy but suicidal for the US economy. Murder/suicide seems like the way Orange Shit-weasel will go out.

(22,456 posts)We all know the true power in the U.S. is run by the major money people.
If we make targeted, clearly defined demands to rein in trump accompanied with effective "no buy" events (it only takes 20% of the population to make a big impact and scare them), they will start to realize that trump isn't as good for business as they thought.

(18,167 posts)Seriously. Start now, today. Don't wait for an organization. Just fucking do it. I have no idea how long I've advocated this, whether here on DU or elsewhere. and I've accompanied that advocacy with the lament that too many Americans are still too damn comfortable to be able to do without. Skip the effing Starbucks. Skip the McDonalds. SACRIFICE. If you don't actually SACRIFICE, it's meaningless. Real people are being hurt by this shit, and have been for years. Oh, but now it might hurt YOU, so now YOU're going to do something?
It's time for our side to step up and face down the leopards that are eating EVERYONE's faces.
You, or you, or you, or you could be out of a job tomorrow. You, or you, or you, or you could lose your Social Security benefits tomorrow. Are you even remotely prepared for that? Or have you been saying, "Well, I didn't vote for the leopards eating people's faces party"? That's not going to stop them from eating your face, too.
The warnings are out there now that we could be headed for a 💩 recession. What happens if that becomes a Depression? No one dares use that "D" word any more than they dare use the other one, "Dictatorship." Don't want to go all hyperbolic and scare the common folk now, do we.
Think. Again.

(108 posts)I stopped buying American products immediately. I was surprised to find out other Canadians had the same idea, and within a few weeks, there were reports that 85% of Canadians had either stopped buying American products or were about to boycott them. 85%? I couldn't believe it. And if anyone was asking us to do this, I missed the announcement. Next thing I hear, people are scrapping plans to visit the U.S. even though in some cases that was costing them sizable deposits. And again, these are personal decisions. I think the advantage we had is that the attack came from without not within. Trump united us.
But even though Americans are divided, thanks to the radicalization of the right, there are enough Americans who are horrified by what Trump/Musk/Putin are doing for boycotts to have the desired effect, that of reclaiming your democracy.
So, yes. Just do it.
