Social Security is the lifeline for 70 million current Americans and has been operating reliably for 90 years. The operating cost of this program is miniscule compared to the number of people they serve and the amount of money they oversee. These are not do-nothing or patronage jobs. The people at Social Security have served us well, and most citizens are thankful for this service.
Medicare serves probably our toughest health insurance clients, the elderly. They do it at a fraction of the overhead of any of the private insurers who serve healthier clients. Medicare runs at an overhead of less than 3%, compared to the overhead (including profit) of 20% or more for private insurers. Again, most Americans are thankful for the service they get from Medicare and its workers.
I can't think of a single private entity who could (or would) provide the same level of service for the same cost as our current Medicare and Social Security.
Thank you, Federal Workers. For keeping civilization running.

(929 posts)Than all the private businesses. We are not shipped to offshore call centers like almost all private businesses do. We get superbly trained our fellow citizens to answer our questions.
Imagine that employing Americans.

(746 posts)I must say that my entire experience with Social Security and Medicare has been positive and professional. The websites are easy to navigate and I hope this can continue.

(12 posts)He is a veteran. Loves his job. He especially likes helping the folks that come into his office in need of assistance. All of this chaos is so unnecessary. It breaks my heart to see these organizations with such dedicated employees being put through this craziness.
