THE CALL OF THE NATION: A PLEA FOR TAKING POLITICS OUT OF POLITICS

I have started re-reading a book about a dystopian future: The Iron Heel by Jack London, published in 1908. In it, I found a reference that I wondered if was factual, and found that it was. There is a passage attributed to David Starr Jordan, who was the first president of Stanford University.

In following that lead, i found that he wrote a book titled The Call of the Nation: A plea for taking politics out of politics published 1910. He writes about the role of people in government, and how political parties are a detriment to good governance, how government should be in service to the people, providing what individually we cannot provide.

Here is a quote from the book about democracy: "Democracy is the great training school in citizenship in which the rules of good government are worked out by experiment. Its success is the best guarantee of good government in the future. When the people know what hurts them, that particular wrong must cease." I find this to be one of our current problems, we aren't working to find what hurts us, and ceasing that particular wrong.

I don't know what the near future will bring, but hopefully, we will learn how to correct the current wrongs. My only fear is that such corrections will not come peacefully, or quickly.
