America is not a comfortable place to live anymore.

In my opinion, the drama and the threats from the political leadership of this country should not be something that citizens have to endure every day. What happened to "ensuring domestic tranquility"? What happened to "promoting the general welfare"? Our Constitution is under attack, as is every branch of our government.

People should be able to live in peace without the daily threats of sadistic autocratic leaders. We should not be so over-whelmed with irrational and dangerous rhetoric every day.

If I was a young man, I think I would move to Canada or Mexico or someplace in Central or South America? It's not just "politics". It is something much more meaningful.

if we were younger go to Germany and then anywhere in europe from there. My husband can get german citizenship because his dad never became an american citizen. And me because we are married. I also found out once you are citizen in europe you can live anywhere that uses euro.

We didn't do it when we first found out because we had one child in college and the older ones were starting to have kids. Didn't want to live that far away. We said if it was now and we were 20 yrs younger we would talk kids into moving too.

I spent 3 months alone in Ireland summer of 2019, really loved it. I am Irish mostly, my family came over during potato famine. I went all over Ireland staying in mostly small pensions, sheep farm way up north, the araan island with only 150 people on it and they all speak gaelic. Spent a week there, so quiet. Even went to a yoga retreat in the Burien. I made friends with a lady that lived in Belfast and when I went there she took me to the peace wall and had me write on it. Very special time!

I think my younger daughter may move to Europe this summer. My older daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter live in a country that values things like education and health care. The younger one may take a teaching position there.

While I am happy for them, I know our country loses when talented young adults leave. But the damage being done to this country makes them uneasy, to say the least. It's the opposite of when my grandfather's sisters and aunts came here from Ireland.

I don’t know if I’ll live long enough to see the end of these fascist pendejos, but as long as they’re around, I’ll be here to fuck with everything they attempt to do. Of course, my kids and grandkids, as well as the rest of my family, are free to range as far and wide as they see fit, in fact, I’ve always encouraged a free range existence.

try to leave anyway. Portugal accepts SS as income to fulfill the passive income requirement, and I could deposit the required year’s worth (about 10k) in a Portuguese bank account, manage to get a rental lease, and rent out my home here.

I have a lot of family in Europe so figured it might be worth risking the upheaval.

The catch is it’s impossible to get private insurance coverage with 2 strikes against me: >70 and cancer. Although I hate insurance companies, this one makes sense. It’d be like looking for collision coverage for an already-wrecked car.

A young family I know, all US citizens, they are working on moving away.
Got a new baby coming soon.

Their Reasons:

USA is now full of HATE. Trump and Republicans seem all ok with widespread bigotry and hatred towards large sections of the US population.
The standard of living in the US is just fair,
Other nations have a far better standard of living.
Other nations have far happier populations.
Other nations have better health care systems, inexpensive.
Other nations have a FANTASTIC standard of living and support for families.
Other nations have a FANTASTIC standard of living for elderly and retired.

No place is perfect.
But the US has, and is turning into a cesspool of hate towards others.
The US Supreme Court is extremely biased and corrupt now,
The FBI is now extremely corrupt and controlled by Trump wackos.
The US govt is extremely corrupt and controlled by Trump wackos.

USA, It’s now a repeat of Nazi Germany in mid-1930s,
And appears it’s getting worse by the day.

Who wants to stay here for that?

I am so sick of seeing Trump every day of my life. This malignant idiot has to be the center of attention and on TV every day. He has been like this his whole life and for the past ten years this orange clown has been in our faces every day. It destroys my quality of life. Life used to be pretty good before Trump. This does not even begin to address how bad life is and can be worse in an authoritarian state, which is where Trump Musk is trying to go. Terrible. I am sick of all of it.

Mar 2025

https://poets.org/poem/let-america-be-america-again

Let America be America again.

Let it be the dream it used to be.

Let it be the pioneer on the plain

Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—

Let it be that great strong land of love

Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme

That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty

Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,

But opportunity is real, and life is free,

Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There’s never been equality for me,

Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?

And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,

I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars.

I am the red man driven from the land,

I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—

And finding only the same old stupid plan

Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,

Tangled in that ancient endless chain

Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!

Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!

Of work the men! Of take the pay!

Of owning everything for one’s own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.

I am the worker sold to the machine.

I am the Negro, servant to you all.

I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—

Hungry yet today despite the dream.

Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers!

I am the man who never got ahead,

The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream

In the Old World while still a serf of kings,

Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,

That even yet its mighty daring sings

In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned

That’s made America the land it has become.

O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas

In search of what I meant to be my home—

For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,

And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,

And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came

To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?

Surely not me? The millions on relief today?

The millions shot down when we strike?

The millions who have nothing for our pay?

For all the dreams we’ve dreamed

And all the songs we’ve sung

And all the hopes we’ve held

And all the flags we’ve hung,

The millions who have nothing for our pay—

Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again—

The land that never has been yet—

And yet must be—the land where every man is free.

The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—

Who made America,

Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,

Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,

Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—

The steel of freedom does not stain.

From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,

We must take back our land again,

America!

O, yes,

I say it plain,

America never was America to me,

And yet I swear this oath—

America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,

The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,

We, the people, must redeem

The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.

The mountains and the endless plain—

All, all the stretch of these great green states—

And make America again!

I was a fighter; and fought against everything 'bad' that ever happened to me.

Now that I am old, decrepit and frail; with no options except to stay. I just can't see a 'younger me' now, being any different than I was when I 'was' young when leaving MY country for any reason would not have been an option that I would have even considered. I would stay and fight.

Some countries now seem to be safer than others; but, for how long will they last if US democracy completely falls? How long can the little bit of democracy that we still have last, if voting Dems. leave the country?

That, being said, I will not blame or shame anyone who has the resources and opportunity to leave in their going. Hopefully, wherever they land, they will try to make that, and the world, a better place to live.

Knowing that my time on this planet is a lot shorter than it was even yesterday, I have decisions to make and/or revise if I want to leave it, even a tiny bit, better than I found it. Before 21 Jan. that was easy. Today, it is HARD!
