given the Canadian importation of orange juice.
Orange man should be happy - not.

(64,890 posts)It used to be a major agricultural sector. Unfortunately, tract housing, citrus greening disease and repeated hurricanes killed the Florida Sunshine Tree.
And of course, The Littlest President's tariff tantrums aren't helping . . .

(64,890 posts)Four years ago, as the state labored to eradicate citrus canker by destroying trees, officials rejected other disease-fighting techniques, saying unproven methods would waste precious time and resources.
But for more than six months, the state, at the behest of then-Secretary of State Katherine Harris, did pursue one alternative method -- a very alternative method.
Researchers worked with a rabbi and a cardiologist to test "Celestial Drops," promoted as a canker inhibitor because of its "improved fractal design," "infinite levels of order" and "high energy and low entropy."
But the cure proved useless against canker. That's because it was water -- possibly, mystically blessed water.
Can I get a hallelujah?

Now that NOAA is being slashed Florida may well get clobbered by a hurricane it won't know is coming along with evidence of the growing threat of climate change being lost.

(13,431 posts)To make orange juice here. I am not sure Americans have yet understood that we are turning away from goods made or produced in the US. It is not a small group but a large segment of the population that are buying first Canadian and secondly any country but the US. We have a large following world wide that are also supporting Canada by buying Canadian goods and forgoing American. This is before the tariffs are even in place, it is about the betrayal and I do expect within a few months, especially after they dispose of it he inter province trade barriers, the US economy will take a hit.

(55,503 posts)the last bag I bought was from the US. Our grocers are working hard to provide us with alternative choices so we can avoid buying US products where possible. The store, the one I shop at, had all the Canadian-made products clearly identified which made my shopping quicker and easier.

(55,503 posts)It had little cards that stuck out from the shelf stating Canadian-made with a small maple leaf for each Canadian product. It made it so much easier than having to look at each item I wanted to buy to see where it was from.

(13,431 posts)in the shop canadian groups. I have been shopping at Save-On more because they seemed to have more Canadian products but still poor at labelling them. I am getting Canadian lettuce from them. Celery seems to be the only thing I cannot find from other than US, hoping that will change soon. I am waiting for the intraprovincial roadblocks coming down so we can get more Canadian goods in the west that are available in the east.

(55,503 posts)I did some checking on line to see what products are made in Canada when trump first started his threats and the only area that seemed to be a problem for me was things like shampoo, conditioner.

(13,431 posts)I actually surprised myself how few items from US I regularly buy this time around. It is primarily produce that is my problem but it is getting better. Most Canadian shampoos and conditioners are small outlets, expensive and online. I use L'Oreal products now and Dove is British I think.

(55,503 posts)I thought Unilever was an American country but you are right, they are British. Thanks for the tip! Produce is a bit of a problem for me as well, especially in winter. I love Caesar Salads and there isn't always Canadian (greenhouse) grown Romaine available so it is one of the few things I still buy that is from the US, that and lemons.

(13,431 posts)And a bigger grow light to grow my own veggies. I am just 2 weeks in and the first go will be for outdoor summer growing. It took only 48 hours for the first lettuce plants to sprout. I am going to experiment with different plants but hope to grow some of my own all year.

(55,503 posts)I am amazed at how quickly the seeds germinated and how tall the sprouts are already. She is going to try and grow some Romaine indoors and, if it works, will help me do the same.
Come summer, I get my Romaine from her, she grows it in her greenhouse and I also get fresh raspberries and whatever else I can convince her to share with me, lol.

(1,390 posts)Florida could give two shits about oranges now....I remember when a ten acre orange grove in Bartow was a few thousand dollars.
They have ripped out thousands of acres of oranges and put townhouses "from the 300's" in instead.

(6,713 posts)Disease and hurricanes completely decimated Florida's orange business. They produce a fraction of the oranges they used to. If you look at a carton of "Florida's Natural" orange juice and look for the source of the oranges, it usually lists multiple countries.
