Reporter: Can you share how your information about war plans was shared with a journalist?

Hegseth: So you are talking about a deceitful and highly discredited so-called journalist who has made a profession of peddling hoaxes

(38,434 posts)I had already followed the link in the OP and listened to the video twice before commenting on what he (didn't) say in the video at the link.
You took the time to provide a link with additional information. I always appreciate additional specific information - even if it changes my impression of what he did or did not say.

(257 posts)This utter moron leaks out sensitive classified information during an online conversation without taking 2 seconds to double check who he is communicating with, and he accuses and insults the person (Jeffrey Goldberg) who he leaks the info to. What a complete, inept asshole we now have overseeing the military. And his idiot boss disses the Atlantic magazine after first claiming he knows nothing, never heard anything, but say the publication is going bankrupt. This unchecked out of control way of conducting secret US military business definitely places the security and safety of these United States and it's inhabitants in deep jeopardy, and there should be consequences regarding these actions, especially when an oath was taken to uphold and protect the United States. Sounds like grounds for impeachment considering these failures. This follows the firing a short time ago of staff members who's job it is to monitor and maintain our nuclear weapons facilities. I would be concerned to give Hegseth a paper clip to play with...let alone the country's whole military!

What I want to know is why was a reporter a contact in his encrypted messaging app in the first place?

(3,843 posts)Goldberg left that out of his account. He made sure anyone who read his account would know that, when it came to sensitive information, he did not recount it. But he saw it. It was released.
I'm pretty sure the answer to your incisive question goes like this: It was an accident.
That's pretty clear from the story as well.

As in a Baseball Umpire calling out a player.
Any nominal watcher of Trek, or Science Fiction, and Baseball lovers (I enjoy it); you'd probably enjoy the Deep Space 9 episode:
"Take Me Out To The Holosuite".
(just came on Pluto TV yesterday)
Some ST For total beginners.
Deep Space 9 is a Space Station. The Commander, Captain is Benjamin Sisko is in "The Federation" (of United Planets). He's also a baseball fanatic, and keeps a baseball on his desk. Baseball is making a revival in part of The Federation.
He has a smug Vulcan (another species as in Spock, the pointy-eared guy) rival from Academy Days (initially sports related). He challenges this Vulcan to a baseball game. There's only 2 weeks to get a team in shape: "The Niners". So it's all about their prep, and the actual game.
The Holosuite is often a 2 story high by 1+ city block wide "box". They use energy to matter converters to create real scenery, buildings, cities, natural landscapes, rain, snow, fire etc right there, and vistas in the distance, objects, people, animals to make scenes, stories etc for participants to have fun, for study, practice, etc. They can make just about anything happen.
There are Safety Protocols to keep users safe. However they can be disengaged. People then can be Injured, or killed.
Anyway, it's really funny I m h o. Enjoy.
