Pituffik, Greenland will not be much fun for anyone

If the Vances are restricted to the US base at Pituffik, it won't be much fun for anyone. It is not like Qaanaaq down south. Much, much smaller and colder, though Qaaanaaq is small and will have high temperatures below 0 F the next couple of weeks.

Should be great photo ops.

ETA: The villagers of Pituffik were moved mostly to Qaanaaq when the base was expanded.

The national dish of Greenland is suaasat, a traditional Greenlandic soup. It is often made from seal, whale, reindeer, or seabirds. The soup often includes onions and potatoes, and is simply seasoned with salt and pepper, or bay leaf. The soup is often thickened with rice, or by soaking barley in the water overnight so that the starches leach into the water. It is also a traditional Inuit food.

Suaasat - Greenland's national dish, so not to be missed, a stew usually made of seal meat, potatoes, onion, barley or rice, salt, pepper and bay leaves. Sometimes described as "robust". If they really push the boat out, there's a version made from whale meat.

Mattak - jerky made from narwhal or white whale skin. If you're being spoilt, it includes the blubber.

Kiviak - a preserved food made from up to 500 little auks, beaks, feathers and all, stuffed into a seal skin and left to ferment and mellow. A winter specialty.

As amuse bouches, there may also be raw, fried, dried or stewed whale, fermented shark, fish roe, roasted ptarmigan, and walrus flippers. Oh, and reindeer for the Bambi lovers among the young 'uns, and polar bear for those who like something cuddlier for a snack.

On the bright side, there are no McDonald's.

On the basis of "don't knock it if you haven't tried it", I should say that I haven't tasted any of these, and they may be surprisingly palatable.

BREAKING: U.S. Vice President JD Vance just CANCELED all public events in Greenland.

Gone from the schedule:
– Nuuk visit
– Sisimiut stop
– Even the dogsled championship

Only thing left? A quiet visit to Pituffik Space Base on Friday.

No photo ops. No crowds. No explanation.
