SHitler is ordering Social Security to STOP sending paper checks, which will result in a half million people NOT getting their payments: https://www.axios.com/2025/03/26/trump-social-security-paper-checks-direct-deposit
Why it matters: The switch risks disrupting the financial lives of some of the most vulnerable Americans, at a time when Social Security is cutting back services to help them.
Driving the news: The federal government must stop issuing paper checks by Sept. 30 in favor of direct deposit, prepaid cards, or "other digital payment options," per an order Trump signed yesterday.
The move is part of a broader White House effort against what it considers government waste, fraud and abuse.
The order includes language allowing for "limited exceptions," including for people without bank accounts.
By the numbers: Nearly 456,000 Americans are still receiving paper Social Security checks as of March, per Social Security Administration data.
That's about 0.7% of the approximately 68.2 million total recipients.
What they're saying: "The continued use of paper-based payments ... imposes unnecessary costs; delays; and risks of fraud, lost payments, theft, and inefficiencies," per Trump's order.
"Maintaining the physical infrastructure and specialized technology for digitizing paper records cost the American taxpayer over $657 million in Fiscal Year 2024 alone."

(9,212 posts)I had planned to do that. I guess a separate stand alone bank account is the way to go if this happens.

(12,412 posts)SSA could make that work in that they mentioned prepaid cards, etc., for everyone.
If properly implemented, with steps to insure no one is adversely impacted, it makes sense.

They do mention debit cards that are replenished every month for those without bank accounts: https://www.ssa.gov/deposit/howtosign.htm

(18,378 posts)And instead of this fiat by a date that is very close, a better approach would be a transition period. First checks are no longer an option for new recipients and then a small reward for converting to direct deposit.

(798 posts)When my mom retired in 1999, she had to receive her checks via direct deposit. When I was accepted for SSI last year, I wasn't allowed to receive checks, either.
I'm surprised that anyone still receives checks, esp. as unreliable as DeJoy's USPS has been lately....

(566 posts)He closes offices... shuts down the phone centers... has a skeleton crew left... and now they are stopping sending a paper check?...
Guess when you have to call to change your banking information, there will be no one to call and no place to go...
How is this bettering the program?... answer... It doesn't!! and thousands of people will be in the SSI trap of unable to get any help...

(2,775 posts)may not have credit or debit cards, or even transportation. A family member may be depositing the check in their own account because the payer cannot leave the residence. Any items needed by the payee are obtained by giving cash to someone in order for them to make the purchase. In these cases a debit card does not good. The grocery store may know the buyer is using someone else's card and refuse the transaction. Vendors at farmers markets generally take cash. Those unscrupulous people who prey on the downtrodden may charge a little bit extra to 'offset their risks'. Like all things republican it's never about improving things from the bottom up.

(42,907 posts)All SS checks are produced BY COMPUTER and printing the checks is only the last step -- the digital record is ALREADY in the computer system. The incremental cost is minimal; computers have been doing this for over seven decades.
The huge figure for "digitizing paper records" refers to old records -- birth certificates, contracts, maps, etc. that were ORIGINALLY produced on paper ONLY and are now being scanned into a digital format. That has NOTHING TO DO with the cost of printing SS checks. It's a pathetically implausible fig leaf of an excuse.

(36,886 posts)Than paper checks. This dicking around with SS is a huge unforced error by Trump. People are nervous and dont trust Trump or Musk to reform SS. This one issue is going to sink Republicans in special elections and in 2026.
