First and foremost, had it been staged, they would have made it far more dramatic.

Either the teddy roosevelt route (he was shot in the chest during speech, and calming finished it before announcing he had been shot) OR they would have made it unclear if he was alive ir dead for hours.

No, this was an attempt that barely scraped him or just gave him a near-miss burn and they played it up to cash in on its campaign value.
