A Message To The NRA From The Four Horsemen Of The ApocalypseBy Paul Bibeau
Hey, guys.
Pestilence here. The other riders and I are pretty busy lately, but we wanted to take a moment and make something clear. In the days ahead many of you will be deploying some pretty stupid arguments against gun control in this country. The whole "cars are deadly, knives are deadly, Nazis started this, and anyway, what about abortion?" kind of dealie. God, it makes our heads hurt just thinking about it. When you write this stuff you make the internet even more stupid than it already is. Instead of wading into this nonsense we wanted to just address one very specific notion you'll be sharing with your friends on Facebook.
You really think gun ownership protects you from the government taking your rights.
This isn't even an argument at all. It's a poorly-conceived Red Dawn fantasy. You say things like this, because in some ugly part of your brain you want to see yourself fighting the globalist army after the collapse of our country. And you have that particular dream because you're old and white, and you're afraid of the way this country is changing. The guns give you a feeling of control.
Okay, well, first of all... when the balloon really goes up you're certainly going to die very, very quickly. It won't be like the movies, trust us. You will lumber down into your basement to start the generator, and you will trip, cut yourself on a rusty lawn mower part, or maybe just have a massive cardiac, because you're overweight, and the only thing you stand a chance against with that AK-47 is a deer. There's a whole political party devoted to telling people like you - the most soft and privileged and pampered members of this wonderful country - that you're some hardy band of rebels fighting oppression. That little fairy tale will evaporate before Glenn Beck collects his gold chips.

These cretins actually think they would stand any kind of chance against the United States military if it came down to armed resistance.

(743 posts)Doesn't that picture make you stop and think we need a U turn in foreign policy? Like, if even Dwight D. Eisenhower saw it, it'd turn him into a damn commie?

(6,795 posts)I know a guy who has been asked to leave a shooting range twice.... once for discharging his weapon and almost shooting his foot off and once when his gun "fell apart" after he had cleaned it.
He fits Bibeau's characterization to a T. Old, white, clumsy....and may I add delusional?!?!

Ok - so we're talking improved gun laws, access to mental health, etc
Can we talk about ways to address this issue? How do we get people involved in FIXING the gov and actually helping out vs creating end times scenarios? Seems like fixing THAT would help a small bit, yes? Reduce the fear, reduce the demand for security blankets for at least some (fantasy) issues.
That goes double for all the FOX, Rush, etc fools stoking the flames.

(3,190 posts)But I'm not so sure it is for a lot of the most serious cases of paranoia.
I say this because I've known a lot of people that fall into this category and I've come to the conclusion that they are suffering from a psychological disorder that may stem from genetics, and are, for all intents and purposes, unreachable. Fortunately they are a small minority and need to be pushed to the fringe where they belong when it comes to making policy decisions. Unfortunately, the likes of FOX, Rush, Beck, et al make it seem as though they constitute mainstream thought and stoke the fire of this vocal and unstable minority.
The article absolutely nails these psychopaths...it's been my experience that many of them DO have wet fantasies about having to defend themselves against a "tyrannical government" or blow away an intruder in their home just to give them the opportunity/excuse to use their guns. They get off on the thought.

(23,272 posts)Its almost like that hush the Obama Admin allowed during the summer before the ACA vote, when "death panels" and other propaganda was allowed to seep into the national conscience.
The NRA silence is allowing some sanity to seep into the public media sphere.
I'm grateful, wary, and hopeful that maybe we can alter some perceptions. Of course the worst of the true gunner believers will never be persuaded but some folks can be reached during this time.

(743 posts)Like many of you, I was pretty devastated by what happened in Connecticut. I wish I could say I was shocked, or even a little tiny bit surprised. I was not.
We have to do something about this. It's good to see that many of you agree.
Happy and safe holidays,
Paul
