Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday the Justice Department will seek the death penalty for accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione.
Bondi said she will direct the interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York, Matthew Podolsky, to seek the death penalty in the case if Mangione is convicted on capital murder charges.

Mangiones attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo has said she was in discussions with the Justice Department over the decision. Agnifilo said Tuesday that the Justice Departments push for the death penalty shows the DOJ has moved from the dysfunctional to the barbaric.
Their decision to execute Luigi is political and goes against the recommendation of the local federal prosecutors, the law, and historical precedent, Agnifilo said in a statement. While claiming to protect against murder, the federal government moves to commit the pre-meditated, state-sponsored murder of Luigi. By doing this, they are defending the broken, immoral, and murderous healthcare industry that continues to terrorize the American people.
Bondi echoed Trumps executive order when she took office in early February, issuing a memorandum denouncing Bidens commutations. They had, she wrote, severely undermined the rule of law and betrayed our sacred duty and broke our promise to achieve justice.
This shameful era ends today, Bondi wrote, announcing the Justice Department would lift a moratorium on federal executions put in place during the Biden administration. Going forward, the Department of Justice will once again act as the law demands including by seeking death sentences in appropriate cases and swiftly implementing those sentences in accordance with the law.

Such a strategy could easily backfire with a jury.
