Kalispell, Montana population 24k - Hundreds upon HUNDREDS showed up!
https://www.dailykos.com/story/2025/4/5/2314808/-Hands-Off-Kalispell-Montana-photo-diary
Montana is a blood red state and Kalispell is one of the reddest parts of the state. The Republicans here have traditionally an overwhelming lack of concern for public health, homelessness, and social problems in general. It was, therefore. surprising that hundreds of people showed up carrying signs for a Hands Off event on Saturday April 5. People gathered at the old Court House and then marched about a mile along Main Street through the downtown business district to Depot Park. The marchers filled the sidewalks on both sides of the street for several blocks.
See the link above for lots of photos. Kalispell is in a +33 Trump area and there was a MASSIVE turnout for a mountain town of 24K people in DEEP DEEP red Montana.
But first - yours truly.

Both sides of the sign before I assembled it.

Got a nod from Meidas Touch and this Threads link has a WAY better video that gives a better idea of the scope/number of people. I would say minimum of 500+ , likely much more. (Click the video from Lynns_busy_life) Maybe give her a like if you could

(711 posts)I love how our side is finally reclaiming the American flag as our own. These MAGAts do NOT own it, and it symbolizes everything that they are against: freedom, inclusion, compassion.

(11,467 posts)My father and his friend raised funds and had that made. One of the bricks paving the ground there belongs to my husband and me.
My father posed for the statue. He was in the Army 30 years. They didnt use his face as the model but from the neck on down it is 100% him and I recognize that as if it were a photo.
I lived in Kalispell for a number of years, off and on. My family settled in the Flathead valley region in the early 1900s. Wheat farmers. My great great grandparents are talked about in some big huge history of Montana book, somewhere. My grandfather and great grandfather helped build the Going to the Sun highway and Hungry Horse Dam. My mother briefly owned a yarn store near Lindermann school, which I attended in the 7th grade.
I recognize every single building and place in every one of these photos.
Thank you for sharing them, and thank you for standing up for Montana and America and all that is decent and just.
Oops I guess it is Depot Park. I keep forgetting. My family stubbornly continued to call it Veterans park even after it was renamed Depot Park in the late 1960s.

(31,430 posts)Thats so awesome that your dad stood for the statue in the park. Everyone still calls it depot park, btw!
The original doughboy statue from in front of the courthouse is in Columbia Falls now - I see it several days a week.
Both Mr. Maru and I have some roots in Montana. His mom was born here and I have people in Ronan. My great-grandfather is buriied there.
So cool about your family - Ill never see the statue in Depot park the same again! I love it!

(11,467 posts)I have my memories, which are precious. I have my memories of the beauty of the land.
I took my husband to see Glacier National Park and I got to see it through his eyes
for me, it was home. Beautiful, but not shockingly so, because it was home, you know? And for my husband, he was calling his relatives and saying it was the most beautiful place he had ever seen and telling them they would not be able to believe it, unless they visited themselves and saw it.
By marriage, my cousins belong to the Salish-Koontenai tribe, so on that side of the family, the roots go much further back than six generations.
My ancestors grew wheat in the shadow of the mountains rising straight up from the valley, no intervening foothills. The local cemetery holds so many relatives.
Flying over Montana for the first time, my husband looked out the window at the roads in view below, and saw only one car. He was so confused
he could see a patch of land maybe fifty miles large, and a road with only one car. He asked where all the cars were, why there wasnt any traffic. He had never seen that sort of thing, either, the emptiness. He is from Syracuse New York. I told him, this is Montana, there are a lot of acres and not so many people.
Thank you again for protesting even in a deep red area where people have guns and its risky. 💙💙💙💙💙💙

(14,381 posts)That was my sign. Someone took my picture holding it up and posted it on Facebook. My daughter happened to see it and sent it to me. The lady who took it said that she thought it was the most important sign there because at any minute we could lose that privilege.
Sorry I cant post it
I communicate on an iPhone, and Im not very clever when it comes to posting photos here.
