7. AP: Stock market tweet falsely attributed to Trump
Sun Apr 6, 2025, 12:56 PM

https://apnews.com/article/8606880839

CLAIM: President Donald Trump tweeted on Feb. 25,2015: “If the Dow Joans ever falls more than 1000 ‘points’ in a Single Day the sitting president should be ‘loaded’ into a very big cannon and Shot into the sun at TREMENDOUS SPEED! No excuses!”

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The tweet was not written by Trump. It was fabricated and it was first posted in 2018, not 2015.

THE FACTS: Social media users recirculated a screenshot of the fabricated tweet Monday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2,013 points. It was created in 2018 to make it appear Trump tweeted it when Barack Obama was president. The steep drop in the Dow, following concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus and a crash in oil prices, led to an automatic halt in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, a step that had not been taken in two decades.

Shaun Usher, author and blogger, first shared the post in 2018 as a joke and later said he did not intend for his tweet to be taken seriously. On Monday, he addressed the tweet again after retweeting a Snopes fact check of the tweet.

The screenshot of the false tweet was shared on Twitter and Facebook where it received thousands of likes. Many of the posts shared the false image with comments suggesting that Trump’s words were coming back to haunt him.

13. Satire?

I waited a while to respond. I apologize if I'm wrong, but it seems to me you got upset at being fact-checked.

You gave two responses. The first is that the misleading post doesn't hurt anybody unlike MAGA mistruths, which often do. True, but I don't think that's a good justification for a misleading post.

The second response (the link to pics comparing Trump's cabinet to a meeting of inmates in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" ) is apples to oranges. The Cuckoo's Nest post is obviously satire. It's funny. Nobody would take it for truth - nobody would think that that's really Trump's cabinet. The post I fact-checked, your OP, is not obviously satire. I posted the fact-check because several replies to the OP seemed to take it seriously as if it were true.

Bottom line: If you knew the OP was satire, you might have indicated so. Or, you could have responded to the replies of folks who appeared to think it was true telling them it was indeed satire. On the other hand, if you thought your OP was really a post from Trump, it's OK. I've seen that fake Trump post submitted here a few times and I've seen the fact-checks about it, so I fact-checked as a public service. I don't think less of people when they post misleading content. It's very easy to do in this world.

... as protected speech.

What is your complaint: the 1st Amendment, or concern for Mango Jebus's feelings?

Where do you stand on this?

When we come out of this we want voters to say "Republicans lied to us, I'm voting Democrat."

We do not want "They both lied to us. I'm staying home."

that they think will benefit them. The demand voters... and many will never say
R lied to us, if so they will vote for some other R etc. Let's hope enough come to the other side and recognize what is going on but I will not count on that.
