A weeklong nationwide boycott of Walmart began on Monday, April 7, as organized by The People's Union USA, marking another flashpoint in the growing wave of consumer activism across the United States following the reelection of President Donald Trump.
The boycott targets the retail giant's rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and aims to challenge what organizers describe as unchecked corporate influence.

How Long Does the Boycott Last?
The current boycott runs from April 7 to April 14, but it is not expected to be the last. The People's Union USA has announced additional protest dates, including a second Walmart boycott scheduled for May 2026. Other corporations slated for future action include Amazon (May 612), Target (June 39), and McDonald's (June 2430).

(60,080 posts)a boycott of Walmart means I am entitled and out of touch.
To those people, I would say: the boycott lasts one week. No one is telling anyone to starve. If you're a Walmart shopper, I bet you could make it a week.
In doing that you will be saying something to a company that bankrupts municipalities by not paying taxes, and encourages its employees to go on food stamps because they don't pay a living wage, thereby unloading their labor costs onto YOU.
If you are in a place that is dependent on it's Walmart, it's likely that very Walmart contributes to the poverty in your area. One week of boycott might just send a message that makes things better for you.

(24,486 posts)Walmarts are everywhere in America and many of us are so poor or it's our only choice to shop that we cannot boycott them. The loudest voice for such boycotts come from people who have lots of other choices and not shopping at Walmarts or boycotting specific things doesn't really mean much to them. Probably for a lot of them they consider going to a Walmart to be "slumming".

(42,528 posts)It was announced in advance, so people can plan ahead and do without WM for ONE WEEK. Of course they'll go back to shopping there afterwards, but the message will have been sent. Even people who can't manage to avoid WM for a whole week can limit their purchases to less than usual, and postpone as much as possible to the following week. It's not like you're asking them to donate their internal organs.

(60,080 posts)Personally, I can't afford to go shopping every week.
And when I boycott Amazon, is it because I'm looking down on someone? Or is that just when I don't shop at Walmart?
I think you are misinterpreting this.

(1,791 posts)But you are potentially destroying the jobs for many people who have no other recourse for work, or at least fulltime work that pays well and offers benefits.
The Waltons don't notice a single thing you refuse to buy there, and pay more for at Target, or Macy's or wherever. They have billions, it isn't a drop in their ocean-sized bucket.
But a lot of older, disabled, uneducated and untrained people depend on their Walmart job to live. A lot of people depend on Walmart's low prices to survive on what little money they have. So, every time you refuse to spend money there, think about that and feel superior to poor people. It's the DU way, after all. And some wonder why the Democrats don't "get" the working class, and especially the working poor. SMH
