I root for her like I would a member of our family. I know she will return to Congress when she feels she's ready.

(5,158 posts)It's sad she has to step down, but I do understand. She still has a long road ahead of her. I have a feeling we haven't heard the last from Gabby, though.
Sarah Palin can go to hell for her role in "targeting" Gabby. Hope Caribou Barbie is happy now.

(11,017 posts)I also blame Sarah Baracuda and her 'targets'. Mission accomplished, hey Palin? Nothing will change my opinion.
That smile is great to see. We will miss you, Gabby.

(5,330 posts)Poster really nailed it right there.
This had nothing to do with the "gun lobby", but rather the piss-poor state of mental health services in this country any more.
I have no doubt even if guns were completely banned, Jared Loughner would have found a way to harm her. Might have even succeeded in killing her and many more than he did had he used a bomb instead of a gun.
The fact is indisputable, Jared Lee Loughner was able to buy a handgun and two 33 round magazines. Yes, the school system and the military failed in not reporting him, but he was still able to buy those items without so much as a basic interview to determine if he was of sound mind.
"I have no doubt even if guns were completely banned, Jared Loughner would have found a way to harm her. Might have even succeeded in killing her and many more than he did had he used a bomb instead of a gun."
That's pretty disjunctive reasoning...you're not suggesting the tragedy would have been the same if he wasn't able to purchase a handgun and extended capacity magazines are you?
I'm entitled to my opinion of where the ultimate failure in this tragedy rests and I'm sticking to it.

(5,330 posts)The 33-round magazine canard is weak sauce.
The bottom line is: where there is a will, there is a way.
Focus shouldn't be on the particular tool he used, but the reasons WHY he did it.
Until we address that, nothing will stop future episodes of mass violence from recurring.

(27,711 posts)...a gun control system that did not stop the obviously insane for purchasing a gun. Why protect the right of the insane and criminal to buy a gun?
LAGC
(5,330 posts)They were never given the mental health help that they needed, so they were never flagged in the NICS system. No amount of gun control would have prevented them from passing their background check, unless you know of any clairvoyants who can staff a Department of Pre-Crime.
Ironically, if they were given the help they needed, they probably would have never felt the need to purchase their guns (or any other weapons) in the first place, due to their paranoid delusions.

(27,711 posts)There are measures that we can take, that other Western nations have already taken, such as psychological interviews for firearms licensing that would have prevented this horror.
Do you think Loughner or Cho would have lasted 5 minutes in such an interview?
