The original video is from Thomas Powell Jr., a YouTube version of videos he puts out on Tik Tok and Instagram as a Chicago-area social media creator, this particular one about a North Carolina woman explaining her support for Trump's tariffs as an antidote to various forces that closed textile mills in her area.

A comment I left there has, at the time of this writing, 220 likes and 9 replies. The replies are all of the "YAS!" or the "THAT and this other thing!" variety.

Lady, maybe you should ask what was going on in the days of people's parents and grandparents vs. later. Lo and behold, Wikipedia provides an answer: "Cannon (Mills) remained family-owned until 1982 when it was sold to David H. Murdock. Murdock sold the company to Fieldcrest in 1985, becoming Fieldcrest-Cannon. The company was sold to Pillowtex Corporation in 1997, which entered bankruptcy in July 2003. The remaining Cannon brands were purchased by the Iconix Brand Group." So back in the Good Old Days, it was a family-owned business, but then Reaganomics happened and became just another corporate subsidiary to be traded about and reorganized to better serve its new owners and do what THEY thought would maximize their profit, and old ties to the community do NOT maximize profit. Those mills closed and those people lost those jobs because after 1980, the highest virtue in the land was shooting money skyward, as much as possible, as fast as possible, as high as possible. Y'aint gonna change that by electing Republicans to office.

the owners of a company were proud of providing jobs for a community and were satisfied with making a good profit for themselves while having pride in their product. The rest of the business world does what it can to mock such people, put them out of business any way they can and try to grind the memories into dust but I remember and so do millions of others.

When business mantra went from "The customer is always right" to "We must maximize shareholder return". IMHO, I believe if you take care of the former, the later will take care of itself.
