President Donald Trump told El Salvador's president Nayib Bukele to build more prisons to hold U.S. citizens.
The U.S. president declared his willingness last week to send Americans to a notorious prison where his administration has sent alleged gang members as well as a Maryland man who was deported by mistake and he was caught on video urging Bukele to get ready for "homegrown criminals" to join them behind bars.
"Homegrown criminals are next," Trump told Bukele. "I said homegrowns are next, homegrowns are next. You've got to build about five more places. It's not big enough."

(13,832 posts)"So what are the conditions like inside the prison in El Salvador where people are likely to be sent? The Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT), a 40,000-capacity megaprison 45 miles from the capital San Salvador that opened in 2023, is a place where prisoners receive no visitors, do not participate in any rehabilitative or educational programming, and do not spend any time outside. The prison was constructed as part of Bukeles campaign to eliminate crime and gangs. The result: more than 84,000 arrests in the country since March of 2022, almost entirely without due process. Bukele suspended basic rights such as access to attorneys and the right to a speedy trial through his 'State of Exception,' making it simpler to arrest, prosecute, and imprison suspected gang members."
"As of January 2024, El Salvador had the highest incarceration rate on the planet, with more than 1,000 people in prison per 100,000 residents. Notably, Senator Ossoff, in his letter to Rubio and Bondi, pointed out that the U.S. State Department warns U.S. citizens who travel to the country about Bukeles declaration of a 'State of Exception' and notes that those released from some of the countrys prisons 'reported a lack of food and potable water and being limited to two tortillas, one spoonful of beans, and one glass of water per day.' Human rights advocates have found more than 6,000 violations in the countrys justice system, including 'arbitrary detentions, torture, due process violations, enforced disappearances, and 366 deaths within state custody.'"

(526 posts)Peaceful demonstrations, long record breaking speeches by Democratic Senators, and progressive comedy shows aren't enough to stop these Nazi's. Its going to take people dragging these fascists out of power by force and trying them for their crimes. Trump is a dictator and will eventually move to jailing critics and silencing sites like this.
All of them need to be in prison or facing the death penalty for their crimes. They're monsters and are no different than the Nazi's who ended up at Nuremberg after World War 2.

(11 posts)No!!! It's going to take people to vote down ballot blue, to regain the Senate and the House of Representatives. When that happens, the Dem House will Impeach Trump and the Dem Senate will indict. Once indicted, he will be expelled from office, but we need the Dems to do it.
The Supreme court did leave that crack in the immunity decision. The Dem Congress can also impeach him for the insurrection and get him out that way. There is a clause in the amendment that states an insurrectionist can be expelled from office once Congress indicts. Dont give up. Vote Blue!!!!!!

Voting is not going to solve the issue we're facing.
Trump is rapidly going full dictator and his transition to dictator is not slowing, its accelerating. I doubt we have the luxury of waiting for the midterms or the certainty that our votes will be even counted fairly if we even have a vote by that time no matter how large the turnout is.
This is how Trump's screwed up mind works.
He dredges up some halfwit idea from the cesspool that is his brain. Repeats it over and over to his sycophantic staff and cabinet. They break every existing law to make it reality to satisfy him.
Just in the last few days he has floated sending Americans to prisons in El Salvador, telling Congress to terminate funds to NPR and PBS, refusing to honor Court judgements, blocked the AP, threatened CBS with loss of broadcast license, etc etc etc.
That insane sociopath brain of his will continue right on escalating the severity of new and even more dangerous ideas until we're living in a full blown dictatorship comparable to Putin's Russia. At the rate his clogged up septic tank of a brain works that will happen long before the midterms.
Even if we're lucky enough to actually be able to vote by the midterms and if we're even more lucky to actually win in those future elections without the vote being tampered with I seriously doubt that the current crop of Democrats will do much of anything to lock these criminals up.
It was obvious back in 2020 where Trump was going and that he would try again in 2024. The Dems did nothing in those 4 years to stop or block him when they had a chance.
I'd love to have a positive outlook on our future but ignoring current events is dangerous because it encourages placidity. It's clear to me that removing him and his followers will require force. If there is a vote in the midterms, of which I doubt, I of course will be voting blue but I don't think that will end this mess even if by some miracle we managed to win. This is a cancer that will have to be cut out of this country by force with all the perpetrators facing accountability for their crimes.

(11 posts)I have a letter to the Supreme Court.
While it is uncommon, the Supreme Court holds the authority to overturn its own rulings.
We, the people, have a unique opportunity to urge the Court to reconsider the immunity granted to President Donald J. Trump.
If we inundate the Supreme Court with millions of letters expressing our concerns, we can demonstrate our deep dissatisfaction with their decision on immunity.
Our collective voice matters and can prompt the Court to reflect on its stance.
Attached is a letter to the Supreme Court, asking them to take into account the possibility of overturning the immunity granted to President Donald J. Trump.
Let us make our voices heard! You have permission to edit any way you like.
Also, I sent my letter yesterday. I signed it "Concerned United States Citizen". Gave 12345 Any Street USA with my zip code.

The Honorable Chief Justice [Name]

Dear Chief Justice Roberts and Honorable Justices of the Supreme Court:
I am writing to respectfully petition the Court to reconsider and potentially overturn the legal doctrine of immunity as it applies to President Donald Trump, particularly in relation to his current actions in office. Specifically, I seek a reevaluation of the broad immunity protections afforded to former presidents when those actions are alleged to violate constitutional principles or the rights of individuals, especially in the context of ongoing legal challenges.
The principle of executive immunity has long been a cornerstone of American jurisprudence, safeguarding the president from certain legal liabilities during their term in office. However, there are increasing concerns that this doctrine, when applied without limits, could grant an unchecked immunity to a public official, potentially shielding them from accountability for actions that violate the law, the Constitution, or basic principles of justice.
The allegations against President Trump involve actions that transcend the scope of legitimate presidential duties and enter into the realm of potential constitutional violations, criminal conduct, and abuse of power. These include matters involving the alleged incitement of insurrection, obstruction of justice, stealing classified information, illegal deportations, contempt of court orders, and other offenses related to the preservation of democratic norms and the rule of law.
While the need for a functioning and independent executive branch is critical, the public interest in maintaining accountability and the rule of law cannot be overstated. A decision to grant sweeping immunity in cases where a president's conduct might directly harm the rights of citizens, undermine democratic institutions, or erode public trust in the government, risks undermining the very principles the Constitution seeks to protect.
I request that the Court carefully consider whether the broad immunity that has been applied in previous cases is appropriate in the context of the actions of the current president. In particular, I urge the Court to review the decision of immunity with regard to actions taken by President Trump, especially as they pertain to violations of the Constitution or federal law.
The role of the Supreme Court as the ultimate arbiter of constitutional interpretation is vital to ensuring that no individual, regardless of their position, is beyond the reach of justice when they may have committed unlawful acts. The interests of justice, the protection of the Constitution, and the preservation of public trust demand that this issue be given the serious consideration it warrants.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter. I trust that the Court will act with the utmost consideration for the integrity of our democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Sincerely,
