Gil Duran: How Donald Trump Rolled Bill Maher

https://www.theframelab.org/how-donald-trump-rolled-bill-maher/

Very much worth reading in its entirety - so much so I can't decide what to excerpt, other than this:

This is not political clarity. It’s political naïveté masquerading as iconoclasm — or something worse.

For example: Back in 2018, Maher excoriated Geraldo Rivera for saying that Trump seems like a different person in private:

Rivera, NewsNation correspondent-at-large, was criticized when he appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher” in 2018 and told Maher the Republican president can be friendly and warm in private.

“Who gives a (expletive),” Maher, a longtime Trump critic, shot back at Rivera then. “He’s running the world now. What does that matter that he was nice to you at Thanksgiving?”

I think that is a huge part of the answer.

Maher has openly said that backing right-wingers is "where the money is".

Bill Mahar is the worst kind of sellout. He can be bought. But he can't be relied upon to stay bought.

I think Trump would still put him in a concentration camp for what he's said in the past. His memory as to who he thinks has slighted him is long and he carries a grudge. He still hasn't gotten over President Obama making a joke about him at one of the correspondence dinners. How many years ago was that?

As for Bill Maher, I gave up on him long ago. I used to watch him religiously and even went to a see him in person a few times (where he was hilarious, by the way - bygone days, for sure). Now you couldn't pay me enough to watch him.

I agree wholeheartedly with the article.

Always has been. The tactics he uses are those of a used car or timeshare salesman. There's always a segment of the population that falls for that shit. Maher is part of it/

An Apprentice producer weighs in on Maher getting used by Trump: “I assure you Trump is laughing and telling everyone around him how easy it was to manipulate Bill… Trump’s superpower is telling whoever he’s with what they want to hear…”
