etc. commence in full? We are already being fired, being erased, our autonomy denied. So are they going to go full taliban immediately, or do we get to experience regency/victorian structures/strictures first as a step to gilead?

This is why his minions will do his dirty work.

(78,673 posts)American men love skin and boobs.
So the opposite of the Taliban.
American women have to look like Kristi Noem, and Melania.
Huge boob job, lots of botox, hair exertions, plastic surgery to make big fish lips.
Tons of make up and tight clothing, low cut bodice, short skirt, stiletto heels.
If you don't look like that, you go to jail.

(26,092 posts)100% homegrown American and using other cultures to describe it makes it easier to pretend this is an outside or un-American influence when the reality is this country has always been built on these principles.
Asking the question with your framing also ignores the body-, appearance- and gender-policing that many marginalized populations have faced throughout the history of this country -- Black, Native, enslaved, immigrant, fat, GNC, and so on. Just because it's happening to white women doesn't mean it's new.

(129,001 posts)they are, to make a point.
And why focus only on appearance, when I mentioned other things as well? You are, of course, perfectly free to post your own OP on your noted area of concern, which would be of great interest, but don't impute something to me that I did not say. Nothing in my OP referred to white women only, so your criticism is unfounded.

(26,092 posts)when its clear that oppression is something this country does very well. Its actually one of the criticisms of the Handmaids Tale, which you also reference. The books shock factor is that white women are subjected to the conditions Black women were under slavery in the U.S. Black womens rights, activities, dress, etc. have been routinely policed more harshly throughout history here than white womens. So have Black mens. Native peoples. And so on. But when women are targeted *as a group* and lets be honest, white women make up the largest part of that group all of a sudden, its what are we, a bunch of Afghans lol??? Until we reckon with it honestly, well never dismantle it.

(9,148 posts)The dumb Christian mythologies were made up by primitive goatherders who didn't know the Earth orbited the sun. And big surprise that a patriarchal culture made the main characters of the myths male, like God/Yahweh, Jesus, Abraham, Noah, Moses, etc. etc. Eve was a scapegoat and Mary was a rape victim and a vessel for the cruel male sky god.
