I could see that.

It could actually be a gesture that gets to Trump. It would suck for the athletes, but then again it would keep them from being a backdrop for a dictator.

Besides...what with tariffs and the collapse of much of societal infrastructure, it would kind of be an austerity Olympics anyway.

Like, how hot will it be? "We don't know, because the Trump fired the national weather service."

Of course Russia and China will show up.

Pull the Olympics during a Trump administration and expect retribution in the form of cancelling the U.S. olympic team. Do the same with the World Cup, and expect an end to U.S. participation and support for the U.S. national team. Or as Bannon would say, "deconstructing" them.

I say go for it, even though I'm a huge (association) football fan. Let Trump throw a tantrum and leak support, especially over the Olympics.

I'm not a fan of national teams in the first place, because I think it encourages jingoism. Same for the Olympics, btw. But for the current side, there are more U.S. players in the top Euro leagues playing well than ever. It's a big step above what I grew up watching in the dark ages before streaming (or even cable)

Apr 2025

it's the club with the highest payroll. Doesn't exactly work in UEFA competitions (close, though), and the World Cup scrambles things a bit. But who wins doesn't really matter to me. I didn't have a favorite club until Poch coached Spurs, just enjoyed games played that well in the EPL. I still tend not to let it define my life. No, Spurs didn't win trophies under Poch, but when his players made his system work, it was the most beautiful game of football one could hope to watch. Postecogelu's unique style has provided some entertaining games as well, but his opponents now know how to defeat his system (if they have the right players), so he's done in North London. Oh well. There's always the Caribbean Premier League (cricket 20) coming soon, and then a new season of football. Until then I'll enjoy the promotion/relegation battles in the various leagues that I get streaming, answering the totally inconsequential-to-the-grand-scheme-of-things questions of whether Millwall, Wrexham or Edinburgh City will step up, and if St. Pauli and Cagliari can stay up. Come August the season will begin anew after a summer of fake transfer rumors and multi-million dollar deals to watch as well. Circle of life.

So I'm glad you qualified the payroll theory.

While I think Millwall - West Ham matches would be great for the Premier League, I'm kinda pulling for Bristol City in the crazy Championship run-in.

I like Cagliari's run-in at 6 points clear. Really only the Fiorentina match and closing the season at Napoli that should be of much concern. I'll predict they squeak by.

Twas an interesting Europa League match on Thursday. A Spurs back five, really? As for other potential promotion playoff teams, I'm also quite interested in Wimbledon. Having had their club poached by Milton Keynes and starting over again deep in non-league, that club has come a long way. Having Paris FC in Ligue 1 next season could offer an interesting twist as well.

Watching a replay of the Blackburn-Millwall match now - my fourth match today. Benefit of being retired. I can't say I'm a big fan of Millwall given their thuggish history, though Japhet Tanganga does play for them when he's healthy. I kinda like West Ham better, even as a Spurs fan. I'm not sure the EPL needs two of them, but who knows. Would seven London & Home Counties clubs in the top flight be a record? Come on Boreham Wood!

I should say I've also enjoyed watching Leeds United this season, who I think might have a chance of sticking around in the EPL after this promotion, assuming they hold onto their manager. Their roster is mostly intact from the last stint, and they're a great watch.

...to a more conservative city. In short, it was DOA. LA already has the infrastructure to support them, it would be a massive hurdle and prohibitive cost for any other city to host them. Other nations usually build the venues for one and done. Los Angeles on the other hand, has permanent facilities because they are used year round.

Some have suggested a rotating continent at designated cities, with a "host country" using the facilities. In North America, its obviously Los Angeles if they ever go that route.

... rather than risk their athletes traveling to the US, you can BET that those events will be cancelled or moved to another country.

And it's not just the athletes themselves, it's their coaches and trainers, families, fans and followers - ALL of them would be in danger of harassment or worse.

Decisions to move events - for example cancel the World Cup events in the US and move them to Canada or Mexico - must be made quickly because those countries need time to get setup. There are only so many stadiums, hotels, airports, etc. that can handle the extra crowds on short notice.
