Yes I have one in mind but I want to see what that person does over the next year. I am more worried over the 2026 House elections more than anything. The House is the key to 2028.

(11,237 posts)BUT IF WE WANT A POTUS ELECTION IN 2028, WE MUST GET THROUGH THE MID TERMS AND WIN BIG.
Sorry ro shout, but there may not be a POTUS election in 28 if we don't win the mid terms.

(179,005 posts)I realize that people want a leader to emerge right now, but there are many things to consider in a presidential race. Plus, most people aren't as politically engaged as we at DU are, and we run the risk of turning them off if they have to listen to nearly four years of campaigning.

(1,797 posts)I don't think it's too early to think about 2028 yet. Presuming we win the presidency in 2038, we need to have that person hit the ground running. One problem Biden had, which is understandable given the covid vaccine rollout was the most important, is he didn't have some nominees ready to go. I want whoever wins in 2028 to have a clear plan for everything ready to go. Especially given the Senate is going to be tough in 2026 and 2028 so getting some nominees through will likely be harder as well as legislation.
I don't think that speculation on 2028 presidential candidates distracts from 2026, and we know people who are thinking about running will be positioning themselves early.

There's no way of knowing what will happen in the next three days, let alone the next three years.

(18,613 posts)I think a Mid-Term victory is all but assured.
It usually is and considering the extreme position f Trump and his administration...
Should be a gimme.
Problem is... that still doesn't explain how to win a national contest for POTUS.
IMHO... the current Party has moved right on the extreme
I'm 100% convinced that playing kissy face with neocons in 2024 hurt us, not helped us.
AND Fair or not... there is an image, a caricature of Democrats that comes from social media, like LibsofTikTok that is very damaging.
IMHO... want to win, run someone like Bill Clinton.
Young-ish and what we'd call a moderate Democrat. The type who is adored by the blue collar folks and Sunday Football dudes.
Newsom is moving to the center on some topics... I'll be watching him. Whitmer is solid.

(59,147 posts)I want Newsom no where near the 2028 Democratic Presidential Primary. No way, no sir.

(10,333 posts)"""Playing kissy face with the neocons""" is not policy, so if people were stupid and short-sighted enough to look at us welcoming all those who wanted to join forces and defend our democracy against impending fascism rather than the actual progressive policies that were implemented by Biden and Kamala, they are fucking idiots and are getting what they deserve.
They are also not reliable votes and will easily be persuaded by social media propaganda once again, even if we give them everything they want, so I would advise ignoring the Green Party wing of the Democratic coalition and going after those who are actually reasonable, rational, and gettable.

(7,350 posts)Most potential runners are still figuring out the architecture for their war chest. Some may even decide they are not going to win it and just join for a cabinet post later. Lets get to the mid terms first and dam the shit of the asshole from doing anything further.
We have a good field of potential candidates. The GOP has thier hands tied behind thier back right now. Democrats shooting each other before we even know who is running is exactly what they want us to do. Kill off our own kind so they can walk back in.

(5,011 posts)I suspect the campaign for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination
will be well underway, before the mid-term elections are over.
I like Cory Booker--- but if AOC decides to run,
well, I think we may see a groundswell from those younger voters
whom we cannot win without--- and I like her, too.
