‪Mark Joseph Stern‬: SCOTUS seemed pissed at Trump

Obviously, a huge victory for the migrants here and a major defeat for Trump’s lawless effort to rush out a rendition flight before the courts could act.

But also—potentially a massive signal from the Supreme Court that it is finally prepared to go toe to toe with Trump to halt AEA deportations.

BREAKING: SCOTUS orders the government not to remove anyone from the United States under Trump’s Alien Enemies Act proclamation who is a part of the potential class in the Northern District of Texas case until further order of the court.

Only Thomas and Alito note their dissent.

I think the majority that lifted Boasberg’s restraining order truly believed Trump would heed its warning about due process and pause further AEA renditions until SCOTUS ruled on their legality.

Instead Trump tried to sneak out migrants before courts could act. And now I think SCOTUS is pissed.

It is SO unusual for the Supreme Court to issue an order this late at night and honestly incredible only Thomas and Alito noted their dissents.

Also fascinating that SCOTUS rushed out the order before Alito could finish writing his dissent. That basically never happens! Again—majority seems pissed.

what a fuck up it was to give this criminal almost total immunity, maybe they're finally starting to see what a monster they have let loose on the US.

I still don't understand why they would give this criminal that ruling, if the SCOTUS rules against him, he could potentially have them removed and imprisoned because he can claim it's part of his "presidential duties".
did they think would happen by giving immunity.

It's really rich that Alito and Thomas are still holding out. Imo, those two have really shown their true colors with their dissents to this decision. Imagine being willing to allow that criminal to go depriving people of the right of due process, which is enshrined in our constitution!

for a 9-0 vote is a waste of time. I think they conditioned their last 9-0 vote on wording that gave the F a roadmap to blast through the decision.

If so maybe there is a chance if Roberts finally wakes up. I think Roberts and Barrett will side with the liberals. Forget Alito and Thomas. Now there’s just Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. As we know, only when republicans are impacted by something do they suddenly care.
I wonder what that is for those 2!

As he told Gov. Mills from Maine, he feels he IS the law. And by doing so forfeits any kind of due process or humane punishment if we ever get out of this mess. His head needs to be put on a spike and displayed on the National Mall for all to see.

Our do you think just their robes are intimidating enough to get a Hitler imitator to follow their ruling? Kind of doubtful. After all, didn't the majority of them rule that a sitting president can do virtually anything? We'll he's doing "anything." John Roberts will shortly be doing his rendition of Dr. Frankenstein. The monster he helped create is loose!

Raw Story - 'Basically never happens': Legal expert singles out Alito slight in overnight Trump ruling

Tom Boggioni
April 19, 2025 2:29PM ET

In a series of posts on BlueSky, Slate legal analyst Mark Joseph Stern suggested the majority of justices on the Supreme Court appear to be angry with Donald Trump's administration's attempt to swiftly deport more immigrants in Texas while there are still questions about its legality.

Noting that seven of the nine justices on the conservative-majority court stepped in to stop the Alien Enemies Act rendition flight with an order issued at 1:30 AM, Stern pointed out that Justices Sam Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented but were not given time to publish their reasoning.

As he wrote on BlueSky, "Obviously, a huge victory for the migrants here and a major defeat for Trump’s lawless effort to rush out a rendition flight before the courts could act. But also—potentially a massive signal from the Supreme Court that it is finally prepared to go toe to toe with Trump to halt AEA deportations."

Having written that, he elaborated, "I think the majority that lifted Boasberg’s restraining order truly believed Trump would heed its warning about due process and pause further AEA renditions until SCOTUS ruled on their legality. Instead Trump tried to sneak out migrants before courts could act. And now I think SCOTUS is pissed."

It would be almost funny if the stakes weren't so high. When the 6 conservatives made that ruling to give him immunity, they literally set themselves up for something like this. I think they may actually have not realized that they were dealing with a psychopath who would take that ruling as permission to do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING HE FELT LIKE DOING. Hopefully, four of them have finally figured that out. (T & A may know it, also, but those two are never going to admit it. )

Ultimately he wants to get to a situation where he can openly defy the SCOTUS and make it crystal clear that he has total immunity and the unlimited power to do whatever he wants.

If he defies them, what can the Court really do? It's been coming down to this for a long time. Our system of checks and balances only works if the Administration believes in the rule of law and behaves accordingly.

He despises our rule of law, he hates our First Amendment and he will do everything in his power over the next 3 1/2 years to destroy them.

He is crossing the Rubicon. There is no turning back until we are all under the boot.
