Where I do think she'd excel and thrive is in Congressional leadership. Speaker Ocasio-Cortez? Majority leader? That feels like where she may be best suited and what is electorally reasonable and reachable.

If she ran for President, the entire Republican campaign would just be running commercials with her tweets in them. They wouldn't even have to spend that much money.

18. I don't think she will (perhaps ever) have the votes in the House to be elected Speaker or Minority Leader. Far too many

centre-left/centrists (from the New Democrat Coalition), hard centrist corporate Dems (from the bipartisan No Labels Problem Solvers Caucus), and conservadems (Blue Dogs), that when combined, will be very hard to overcome.

Those 3 House caucuses combine to form well over half of the entire Democratic caucus in the House atm, and likely going forward for some time. She also may well haemorrhage votes (depending on her opponent(s) for the positions) from other progressive House members from other identity-based caucuses (the Congressional Black Caucus for instance, and/or the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, etc).

I'm old enough to remember when Pelosi first became Speaker. She was depicted as a far, far, far, far, far Left San Franciscan liberal who was incredibly radical compared to the rest of the party. Of course, by that time, she wasn't. She'd been playing a crucial and effective role in the House by then. But that was the image of her. (There was a hilarious SNL skit with Kristen Wiig when she won Speakership at the time. "The safe word is . . . palomino!" )

I don't think AOC could become Speaker tomorrow or even the next decade. But in 15 years? She'd still be considered young and she has the profile and capability to network herself into position.

will slide enough in a direction wherein the anti-progressive corporate/centrist/conservative elements who are very much against AOC types will be reduced in numbers and influence enough to elect her, unless we are talking a LONG time (20 years at least) in the future.

The utterly ruinous Age of Trump is also an immense wild card. Will we even have a viable democracy in 10, 15, 20 years? Will we have one in FOUR?

34. I have a weird feeling both parties break

They'll still be the main two parties in American politics - that seems unalterable. It just feels like neither of them are prepared for what is happening now. Not just Trump. The age of automation, the economic changes, the technological changes. Both parties groan and creak in an attempt to bestir themselves and can't seem to slough off the heft of age or the calcification in their joints.

And it feels like everyone senses it. Schumer and the CR felt like watching a scene in a movie you already know the conclusion to, but it's happening in slow motion, and no one's turning the projector off any time soon.

And once that census hits . . . it feels like a reshuffling is in the offing. What that looks like, I have no idea. I am not as optimistic as I once was. I think social media have thickened politics into an apotheosis of dumb tribalism. There is no agile thinking, no adaptation, no wiliness, no energy, no joy in the breaking of the old and creating the new.

It's just going to be the same old shit until we ease ourselves into the car crash.

When the country is starting to look at John Roberts as the only thing that can save us, well, isn't it interesting how we got here?

If he runs again, he'll be 77 by then. If she can beat him and win a seat, give her a couple of years in the upper chamber then the Democratic president can offer her a high-level position in their administration.

Her district is heavily democratic (more so than the city as a whole) so it remains to be seen whether she could win a statewide race even in New York State.

That’s the first test case in my opinion. To first win the primary, she’ll need to build a much broader coalition than just her district (and I’m not talking race, since her district is very diverse). She has the name recognition, so that gives her a leg up, but in a democratic state with many other ambitious politicians, the primary will be competitive. Gaining support upstate will be a challenge but is doable. Ironically, she’ll have to look at Hillary Clinton to see how she overcame baggage to win that seat.

I wouldn’t consider her a shoe in for the senate or governors seat even if she’s the nominee, but I think the last republican senator from New York was Al’damato who Schumer beat in the early nineties. Pataki was the last republican governor, thought he race is 2022 was relatively close.

I don’t see how running for the presidency from her current position would be anything more than a vanity run. I don’t see how being a rep from that district is a good springboard to the presidency, but then again look at who is president now…maybe the additional political experienced would be a drawback.
