U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is facing backlash over a tweet she posted after Pope Francis’s death on Monday.

The Vatican announced that Francis died Monday morning after developing a bout of double pneumonia earlier this year. As many world leaders honored the late pope with condolences and heartfelt statements, Greene posted a cryptic statement declaring that "Evil is being defeated by the hand of God."

“Today there were major shifts in global leaderships.Evil is being defeated by the hand of God,” she wrote on social media platform X.

Her post was immediately criticized by social media users who accused her of calling the pope “evil.”

I am sickened, but not surprised, at the venom of this woman.

Her district is ground zero for snake handling, tongue talking, extreme right wing evangelical Protestants. They believe that Catholics are in league with the devil and the pope is a demon.

I mean, they literally believe this. So her tweet is right on brand.

Very unusual beliefs. They didn't used to vote at all. George W. Bush got them to vote Republican. It's one reason that a number of previously blue or purple states are now deep red.

Put them on-line for voters pondering whether to vote MAGA on the one hand or sanity and decency on the other. I’m not a Catholic, but I do know that Catholicism plays an important role in many people’s lives and that Catholic-associated organizations have played an important role in providing numbers and organization during elections. Making voters uncomfortable with being associated with MTG would be a good thing.
