Tim Miller and Sam Stein discuss the bizarre theft of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's purse containing $3,000 cash, a passport, and a DHS badge. How did this happen with Secret Service protection around? And what's the real story behind carrying so much cash?

I haven't seen a single mention of her phone.

(65,156 posts)....given recent Hegseth revelations, I immediately wondered whether Noem's personal or government phones were in her purse, and if they were, how password-protected they were.
This type of incident just reinforces why the Hegseth actions (and those of Mike Walz, Tulsi Gabbard, and anyone else who was on those Signal chats) are so reckless and deserving of being fired.

(1,272 posts)Plenty of people carry large amounts of cash when traveling domestically in my experience.
Old school methods allow incredible deals and opens doors. Never leave on a long road trip with out at least 3K. Believe it or not places exist that a electronic transaction isn't going to work.
Of course there is risk. Having situational awareness goes a long way in keeping you safe.
That a purse snatcher rip her off with SS watching is frosting on the cake.

What is she hiding from us?

(1,390 posts)$3000 is nothing...If you visit any coin show, gun show, Comic-con, or auction of any kind, it is common for people that you would never assume with bib overalls to be carrying that much or way more....Hell, $3000 won't even buy you one ounce of gold at $3400 per ounce.
If she had $30,000 or $300,000, I would wonder more.

(9,212 posts)I was robbed 3x. Once a purse snatching. I had a small amount of cash and the purse was a gift from my father from Germany. After that I never carry very much cash, usually $20 for an emergency and I leave that in my car also. It is all plastic now etc. Sometimes a checkbook if I need it. Many places won't take check now which is crazy, such as some dvm er, if you use credit they take a percentage unless you do it online. So you have to do an electronic bank transfer, or pay online.
When I traveled I had some cash but mostly travelers checks which can be replaced if stolen.
I would not be surprised if she had something illegal going on, but it could be she is rich from being a crook and just carries what for me would be a large amount of cash.

(53,399 posts)In another report the list of items stolen included her checkbook.
Unless you're, like, so ancient you're growing mold you don't even have a checkbook anymore.
