Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI need to say this: I never...ever... not anywhere... put my bag on the floor.
I dont get it. The floor, especially in restaurants and other public places is DIRTY. People track in all kinds of awful things on the bottom of their shoes from the street and from public restrooms. Sorry, but just yuck.
Why Kristy Noem would put a Gucci bag, which cost at least $1,000, along with a Louis Vuitton wallet and all that money, on the floor, makes little to no sense to me.
It would have been something if she decided to take that $50,000 Rolex off and tuck it in her purse. 🙃
I also have a question. Why hasnt the surveillance video been released? Or did I miss it?

The man who allegedly stole a Gucci bag loaded with cash from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was sitting at the table next to hers, according to video of Sundays incident reviewed by Secret Service investigators.
The surveillance footage of the incident at The Capital Burger restaurant in Washington, DC, showed the suspect purposefully moving close to Noem as he zeroed in on her Gucci bag near her feet, a law enforcement source said.
The thief, dressed in dark clothing, sat down at an empty table next to Noem with his back facing her and used his left foot to slide the bag away, the source said. He surveyed the restaurant before eventually picking up the bag, covering it with his jacket and leaving.

I can understand her not wanting to use her card with her name on it. I'd be paranoid as hell if i was in F47's Cabinet.

AllyCat
(18,992 posts)One is a clipped shoulder strap that has to be twisted to unclip. I hook that through the bars on the chair. If there is nothing to clip it to, it goes on the tops of my feet with the strap around my leg.

(1,142 posts)Under my leg. Someone touches it and they get it with the fork. I use whats available, and I dont drink.
Sometimes some well meaning person admonishes me not to put my bag on the floor - but their reasoning is usually superstitious. Very often there's no other place to put it and it's really really uncomfortable to put it on your lap - hanging it from the back of a chair just invites someone to lift it.
The worst is in a public bathroom where the hook on the stall door has been broken off.
Oh the tribulations of carrying a purse!

(11,040 posts)Feels much safer than hanging it off the chair. Ive done this lots of time. However- my purse is only $30 and washable. Other than that - Im a country girl who cleans up chicken coops so germs or dirty not a big thing compared to a stolen bag.

(13,561 posts)No hanging it over the back of the chair, no putting it on the floor, no putting it in an empty seat at the table. When youre out in public, use a small cross-body bag and keep it on all the time. Noem is not very bright.

(6,497 posts)Ewww! So many woman automatically put their purse on the floor - everywhere.
I often say - why? The public floor contains everything tracked on peoples' shoes - Round Up, dog poop, cat pee, and all matter of yucky things.
At the Dahlia household, we have outdoor shoes and indoor slippers.
Now you know way more about me than you want to.

(30,524 posts)But, I agree. At my first job after college in NYC, three of us went out to lunch. The place was crowded. We sat, two on one side of the table, the third person facing us. The woman on the other side of the table had put her bag on the floor. We spent the entire lunch hour eating and chatting. None of us noticed when someone stole her bag. That's how good and fast these thieves are, we never saw it.

(25 posts)I'm guessing why this is being slow-rolled and hushed is because, maybe, she had a gun in her bag too.
If a gun is stolen I believe most jurisdictions require the mising firearm to be reported immediately.

Figarosmom
(13,427 posts)I always keep it on my lap or if in a booth on the seat beside me closest to the wall. Putting it on the floor is dirty and asking for it to be left behind or stolen. I've seen people hanging their bag on the back of their chair too, that's just asking for it to be taken. If I have a lot of cash on me for whatever reason it's in my front pants pocket and if I'm going to be drinking i don't bring a purse, I wear clothes with good pockets.
What I can't get over is she didn't even have the common sense to protect her purse and we are to believe she can handle Homeland Security?
elocs
(24,486 posts)because our wallets become a part of us. For us to hear that a woman lost her purse is like losing your hand. How could that happen--it's a part of you.
I once worked security at a local arena and for concerts when had to look in women's purses at the door. They would just open them so we could see if they were sneaking in any beer of booze to the concert. Huge purses, more like a saddle bag. One woman told me she didn't have anything in her big purse but there was stuff like a giant bottle of hand lotion and other stuff she would need in case she was stuck in the elevator overnight.
A young girl came late and I said I just need a quick peek and she had a big bottle of booze in it.
Although these days there are guys who carry backpacks everywhere that are like a purse.

I don't even put my cheap canvas bag on the floor - can't imagine doing it to an expensive one (if I had such a thing), even if it didn't contain $3K in cash, my passport, phone, DHS access badge, blank checks, credit cards, my medication and makeup.

(25,543 posts)I've sat through many a hockey game with my purse dangling from my knee by the strap to avoid placing it on the floor. I never put it on the floor at a restaurant either. It's actually easy to avoid if you carry a purse regularly. Kind of comes naturally to keep it clean and away from access by others.
