NC-SEN: Senate Dems are getting bullish about prized recruit Roy Cooper

Senior Democrats are increasingly convinced the party will land former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to run for Senate next year, a potential coup for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Why it matters: Both parties acknowledge their Senate success next year will largely rest upon their recruitment efforts this year.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), the chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), has been personally involved in the effort to recruit Cooper, whom she's called a "formidable candidate," sources tell Axios.

But Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has indicated she's passing on a Senate run, despite Schumer's direct appeals.

Zoom in: Cooper is unlikely to make a decision until June, a source familiar with his thinking tells Axios. Until then it's 50/50, the source said.

He sould be a great choice for the Senate nomination.

Whitmer would have been an ideal Senate candidate until the fiasco at the Trump White House. I wonder if she has a video of that moment where she covers her face, and screams at her on-screen self, “after all these years, how could you blow everything in less than five minutes?”

We don't have many opportunities to flip a Senate seat next year, but this is certainly one.

I love Cooper and he would be a excellent choice to run. With that said, he is in his late 60s. Being 72 I feel we need to start looking for younger candidates. I also think Jeff Jackson is an upcoming asset for North Carolina. Problem is we need him in North Carolina right now. Anderson Clayton is another rising star in the Party but again we need her in North Carolina. The Democratic party here still has aways to go before we are North Carolina strong! I have repeatedly discussed this senate race with friends. We have tossed around different ideas and options. Our feeling is that Cooper is the best choice and is well loved in North Carolina. Age be damned!
