China says there are no negotiations with the US over tariffs
By HUIZHONG WU
Updated 4:23 AM CDT, April 24, 2025

BANGKOK (AP) — China on Thursday denied U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that the two sides were involved in active negotiations over tariffs, saying that any suggestion of progress in this matter was as groundless as “trying to catch the wind.”

China’s comments come after Trump said Tuesday that the final tariff rate on China’s exports would come down “substantially” from the current 145%.

“China’s position is consistent and we are open to consultations and dialogues, but any form of consultations and negotiations must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and in an equal manner,” said Ministry of Commerce spokesman He Yadong. “Any claims about the progress of China-U.S. trade negotiations are groundless as trying to catch the wind and have no factual basis.”

Trump had told reporters earlier in the week that “everything’s active” when asked if he was engaging with China, although his Treasury Secretary had said there were no formal negotiations.

Trump had put 145% tariffs on imports from China, while China hit back with 125% tariffs on U.S. products. While Trump has given other countries a 90-day pause on the tariffs, as their leaders pledged to negotiate with the U.S., China remained the exception. Instead, Beijing raised its own tariffs and deployed other economic measures in response while vowing to “fight to the end.” For example, China restricted exports of rare earth minerals and raised multiple cases against the U.S. at the World Trade Organization.

China also made it clear that talks should involve the cancellation of all tariffs it currently faces.

And the idiot hedge fund and financial fund managers fall for it every time.

And all of them are making millions for their financial savvy, and we're about to all be bankrupted by their demands for tax breaks.

Are they willing to cancel all of theirs as well?

For example, they have had a 15% tariff on all US manufactured vehicles for quite a number of years.

There are no Chinese brand automobiles for sale in the US.

We do it to protect our auto industry. Not all trade barriers are bad. Each country has strategic industries they feel they need to protect. That stuff gets negotiated. It's the blanket tariffs that are insane.

And the trade deals the US has had are not bad deals. Trump actually negotiated many of them himself.

But never assing to malice what can be explained by incompetence. I think it's likely Trump and his economic team just don't know what the hell they're doing.

Buick for example builds a few models in China that are exported to the US. Mercedes, BMW and the domestic manufacturers build vehicles in the US that are exported to China.

Based on the statement in the OP, China wants ALL tariffs removed. I merely asked if that meant they would remove all of theirs in turn. Seems fair.

BYD sold 2.6M cars in China in 2023, it's the biggest brand in that country. They sell 0 cars in the US. We only allow those other Chinese made vehicles into the US because they are US companies or in some cases companies from Europe which we have trade deals with.

We don't let BYD into the US at all period. US car makers like Ford, GM, Tesla, and others sell millions of vehicles in China, yet you will never see a single BYD logo on a car in America.

Doesn't mean our trade deals with China are perfect, just that Trump is lying about them completely. Oh, and the current trade deal we have with China was largely negotiated by Trump. Biden made it better with some adjustments, but it's mostly Trump's deal.

And I agree with not letting these cheap Chinese vehicles into the US. The US auto industry would effectively be ended if consumers here could get well made cars at less than half the price from China. GM is the largest automaker in the US and sells 2.1M vehicles in China, could you imagine if the US let BYD sell 2.1M vehicles per year in the US? We're protecting our industry, I think its worth protecting, but when you talk about fair trade, you ahve to look at all the facts.

I've seen multiple posts hare advocating that cheap Chinese EV are good for consumers and if US companies can't compete, they deserve to fail. I disagree, but that sentiment is popular with some who think manufacturing needs to be outsourced as long as it makes products cheaper. As someone who spent a long career in manufacturing, I disagree.

I have seen over the last few decades, that China has no respect for following intellectual property rights, patents or stopping counterfeiting. Also don't follow WTO guidelines. I don't trust them.

Protecting our auto industry is worth doing.

The thing about us transitioning to a service economy (and we have largely done so) is that it wasn't done in a vacuum. So you can't say, "Well, look at what happened, we transitioned away from manufacturing into a service economy, and now the middle class barely exists anymore." They are not cause and effect IMO.

The cause of the plight of the middle class is not because of the loss of manufacturing IMO, it's because of the loss of good pay, good benefits, and pensions. Why shouldn't some warehouse job today pay as much as an auto assembly line worker in real wages made in the 1980s? They're both creating value for their companies with their labor. They're both doing relatively menial tasks that don't take a college education. The "owners" of this country decided to destroy the middle class is why. They created an environment of scared workers who will take less and less while the board gets more absudly rich. They took over the media and created a narrative that unions are corrupt and bad, and in general pitted workers against each other. You see this whenever some group like restaurant workers, or grocery store workers demand more pay and benefits, it's not the rich who get outraged, but other low skilled workers who throw a fit. The union hate and jealousy is palpable everywhere right now. Even a lot of people in unions hate unions.

We transitioned our economy, but forget to bring the good pay and benefits along for the ride. The only reason that happened IMO was greed.
