Judge Hannah Dugan has all-star legal team, including 'LeBron James of lawyers'

https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/2025/04/29/see-the-legal-players-in-the-case-against-milwaukee-judge-hannah-dugan/83327855007/

The federal obstruction case against Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan has drawn an all-star team of legal talent.

Leading Dugan's legal team is Steven Biskupic, the former U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Wisconsin from 2002 to 2009. Republican President George W. Bush selected Biskupic, who oversaw a series of public high-profile corruption and police misconduct cases, including the convictions of seven Milwaukee police officers in the beating of Frank Jude Jr. Biskupic was a career prosecutor before his term as U.S. attorney. He is now in private practice.

The most prominent member of the defense team is former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement, a Cedarburg native. As solicitor general from 2005 to 2008, Clement argued more than 100 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Clement, a conservative who was appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, currently represents the law firm WilmerHale, which is suing the Trump administration after it was targeted by an executive order. Clement has been dubbed by some "the LeBron James of lawyers."

Jason Luczak and Nicole Masnica, both partners with the prominent Milwaukee law firm Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown, are also on the defense team. Luczak leads the firm's criminal and white-collar defense team, and Masnica specializes in complex trial litigation and appeals, according to the firm's website.

Craig Mastantuono of Mastantuono Coffee & Thomas, another attorney for Dugan, has long been a go-to criminal defense attorney in Milwaukee. He is known for helping Baron Walker, a man sentenced to 60 years in prison for being part of a pair of bank robberies, win his release in 2018. His case was profiled in the 2016 documentary film "Milwaukee 53206."

the case will go before another judge, one who will be asked if ICE agents should be allowed to intimidate immigrants in his/her own courtroom as they go on inappropriate fishing expeditions in order to fulfill their quotas

My own feeling is that the next sane administraton needs to disband ICE as it now stands, replacing it with an agency with a saner name and mission, make it less attractive to macho bullies.

You can take that opinion for what it's worth (plink, plink)

Like end of career.
Some fed approved this arrest without going through Grand Jury which is the standard way of doing business in federal prosecutions. There was no welfare or the safety of the community issue requiring the immediate arrest of the judge. The DOJ and the FBI chose not to go through grand jury for political reasons. The arresting agents lost any CYA they could have gotten by Grand Jury.

Duggan’s legal team will feast on the bones of the idiot attorneys that will come from Trump world.

that "Judge Dugan was suspended by the Wisconsin Supreme Court". I took that to mean that she was relieved of her duties as a Wisconsin Judge, and the case against her was no more. I guess the case against her still stands. I can't keep up with anymore.

Clement will have fun with this weak case

https://news.bloomberglaw.com/litigation/paul-clement-joins-arrested-milwaukee-judges-legal-team

Conservative litigator Paul Clement has joined the legal team representing Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan (D), who was arrested last week for allegedly helping a migrant evade federal immigration officers.

Clement, who’s participated in more than 100 US Supreme Court arguments, is joining a defense anchored by Steven M. Biskupic, the former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Together, the two Wisconsin natives will take on lawyers from Biskupic’s former office. They’re joined by lawyers from Milwaukee firms Mastantuono Coffee & Thomas SC and Gimbel Reilly Guerin & Brown.

Clement, the former US Solicitor General known for representing conservative causes and groups such as the National Rifle Association, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

He is representing WilmerHale, which is suing the Trump administration over an executive order targeting the firm. His representation is one a several high-profile rebuffs to the administration’s executive orders seeking to reign in international law firms the president perceives as political foes.

Federal prosecutors allege Dugan concealed an unlawful migrant and obstructed officers when she allegedly steered the man—who was present for a hearing on domestic violence charges—and his lawyer into a private hallway, away from officers seeking to arrest him. Dugan, who was re-elected to a six-year term in 2022, faces up to six years in prison, prosecutors said during her initial appearance Friday before Magistrate Judge Stephen C. Dries.
